That the D curve be downward sloping is an assertion of economics. Economists have confidence in the assertion because, if anyone succeeds in rejecting the assertion he will deserve the Nobel prize in Economics. The prize is such a good that many scientists are dreaming for it. That means, many economists are trying to reject the assertion but no one has succeded so far. Thus, the assertion has the status of a Law in social science.
