I'd say Rom's the least delusional of all of us. Even if he can be so pragmatic sometimes I could smack him. ;)

Still, I think he brings up some valid points that are counter to yours (which are also valid) -- I don't think it's an either/or situation. I think we are on the threshold of some significant changes as you've pointed out, but they'll only happen because of the reasons he's pointed out -- lasting change happens typically because it comes down to "it has to be worth my time and money to put in an effort."

So, now that oil prices are at a premium and we're feeling the effects of that rippling outward, there's focused incentive to foment change. Hybrid cars and SmartCars are showing up with more frequency (here at least), recycling options are becoming more accessible, "green" appliances are at the forefront of stores and are much more present in advertising. It shows that consumers are getting it and the demand for these items will confirm the need for new options. The market will answer.

I know those are slow-moving changes but I think they are also lasting and long term. These and other movements are going to encourage additional adoptions which in turn are going to encourage alternatives we've not even considered. For me, right now, a hybrid car is not cost-effective. On the other hand, I'm ready for the next generation of alternative power. I don't think I'll have to wait long.

Re: presidential candidates ignoring this issue -- are you really surprised? It's not something that can be positively explained and encapsulated in a sound byte. What was the estimate in the last article you linked? 30 seconds from the 2.5 minutes of the 70s? To address this topic at all is to scare the vast majority and turn them off to you if you want to be elected. Besides that, I don't believe this is something to be resolved by the government. I think this is something that will be solved by capitalism.
