I thought that the epilogue was justifiable because it is, at least nominally, a children's book, not that I would give it to a very young child. Also, since it is the final book in the series, I think many readers want to know what happens to the characters after "the end," so I don't have a problem with that.

Who knows what J.K. will do? I would be all for her doing another series of this quality.
