Ritalin is speed and my sister was on it for a long time. Caffeine does have the opposite effect and slowed her down. But she loved coffee. Given the magnitude of her ADD, this was soooo not a good thing.

She switched to Stratera and it's the best thing ever. The time-release is better, she doesn't have to declare it for any drug testing, she can drink coffee and other caffeine, the list goes on.

Maybe it would be worth researching if your sister is positive your niece should be controlling her condition through medication.
