Years ago, I had a friend who was a third grade teacher. One of her teaching texts said that "exclamation" was too difficult a word for third graders, and that she should use something like "exciting mark." She continued to use the original term, her reasoning being that if a child can say Nintendo, he can say "exclamation." :-)
