To me, memory is like magic, and it can be either dark or light. In my experience, when something is memorized, it is permanently installed in the brain, which is pretty magic in and of itself. We may, at some point, have difficulty retrieving that information, but it is there, nonetheless.

I was an English major, too, but I spent my working days in retail, not education. Several years ago, when I was managing a shop here in Sedona, I was giving my shopful of customers a little lecture in the properties of the tiger eye stone. Spontaneously, I broke into a recitation of Blake's The Tyger, much to the delight of everyone there. I'm sure my daughter would say "How very Rain Man of you, Mom," and I concede that she may have a point, but it created a moment of magic that day, and that's enough for me. :-)
