Computer networking on language learning

Many teachers are against the use of computer networking to improve language learning. They say computer eliminate many factors that are needed in classroom conversation. In front of the computer, the students do not have to monitor tone of voice, body language, intonational patterns and phonetic varience, for example. It is true that computer classrooms work only with words on the screen, but they can be helpful in many aspects. Three important advantages of computer networking will be considered in this essay: the enthusiastic student response to networking activities, the time to reflect about exchanges prior to participating in them and the reduced “teacher talk”.

First of all, students feel enthusiasm in computer classrooms because computer promote extended exchanges among them, and it is a good support to learn a foreign language. They feel free to product.

Next, an oral classroom can be frustrating for some students, because they realize that can not express their ideas in a second language as well as in their native language. In a computer classroom, however, that is time to reflect about what you are going to write, time to reconsider, to check what other people have written and to review your writing. These facilities give confidence to the students.

The last advantage of network classrooms is that there the students can participate much more than in oral classrooms. Instructors tend to dominate speaking in oral classrooms and some students may be shy to speak in front of fellows that they think have more capability to speak than them. The computer minimize these diferences. Students generally work more than the instructor, and spoken proficiency advantage is banished.

Concluding, computer network is an effective way to help students to express themselves better. It is also a confortable kind of class for those who do not feel fine to speak in front of others.
