Dawn,

The first thing is to check with your State Conservation or Natural Resources Department to see if a permit is needed to trap and relocate squirrels.

Most states require that the animal(s) are causing property damage before a permit is issued. And when they issue a permit, they usually require you to obtain written permission from a landowner where the squirrels are relocated to. It is best to avoid releasing wildlife on Federal, State, or City property or private property where written permission has not been obtained. Fines can be hefty in some states.

As for relocation distance for squirrels, usually 10 miles is far enough. With this said, each state will have their own regulations and will require the distance that the animals must be relocated.

A more effective way to reduce the squirrel population in your backyard is to cut down on their food source.

Make sure trees are trimmed back 10 feet from the house.

You can band trees with a banding material available at most nurseries.

Good Luck,
