Lara,

I totally agree with you. but I do want to clear myself here. an eating disorder is mostly indeed caused by stress anxiety, a low self-esteem, and we all know all the other things it is caused by and it has indeed nothing to do with food.
The research I am participating in is trying to explain the following:
anxiety, low self-esteem, need for control and all these other issues cause problems. For some people these problems come out in an ED, for others it might be addictive problems, for others it might be cutting, others have aggressive behaviour. Anyway, there are a million things these feelings can result in. What we are trying to find out is why some people end up with an ed and others with another problem. There must be a reason why we project our emotions on food and not on other things. So if you take the anxiety, stress and control as given, how do some people end up with an ed and others with something else.
The idea of the research is that people with stress and anxiety and low self esteem who as a child learned that food and feelings are very much connected (this is connected for everybody but for some people more) like for example children who get sick from certain food might tend to project feelings of stress and anxiety on food later in life and get an ed.
The main question really is: do people with feelings of anxiety, stess, low self esteem and control who are learned as a child that food and well being are irrevocably linked tend to develope an ed instead of an other problem compared to peope with these feelings who didnt learn this.

The research doesnt look at the causes of problems, but takes the problems as already there, so why do some people with problems get an ed and others get something else.

I do agree with you on the food issue but I do think this is very interesting. This research idea is by no means proven or considered the truth. There been some research about this in the past: basically that stated that among people with problems (anxiety stress low self esteem, control) girls tend to associate internally (to themselves: cutting, ed etc) and boys associate externally (to others, aggressive behaviour etc). If you want to know more about this, let me know
