I think that even though 509 has issues, there are still plenty of things that we can accomplish regardless. The union is only as good as the membership is active. The issue plenty of people have had with 509 is how they sat on grievances forever. So why don't we have a grievance officer to keep the 509 field reps in order? People talk about IBCO being better with the grievance process but IBCO did nothing for us. It was union MEMBERS insuring that grievances were processed in a more timely manner. And even then, it wasn't nearly as timely as it could be. What is hindering us is that NO ONE ever wants to get involved. All those people attend that meeting demanding change and not a single one other than Jaymie Derderian stepped up to the plate and ran for something. So really, if that attitude continues, we get what we deserve.
