Subject: This is the first thing I remember, now it's the last thing on my mind..

With Christmas practically knocking at their front door, the children had put themselves into a frenzy - the tree had gone up a couple weeks ago, and was steadily accumulating presents beneath it, and there were more to come. The two of them had really gone out of their way this year, and between the three kids there was plenty enough for presents, more than any kid probably deserved. She'd spent an hour putting them to bed, them continuously in and out of their rooms, wanting water, wanting the bathroom, though she knew that they were just wanting to see Santa. After having made a round through the bedrooms to hear the softness of their sleepy breathing, and the evening of it to assure that they were all asleep, she'd gone to the laundry room, bringing out the rest of the presents, and was now nestled under a throw on the couch, a glass of wine in hand, the lights to the tree plugged in, she just watched it - it had been a long time since she'd had a happy Christmas - two or three years, at least, and though this one wasn't ideal, she was happy to spend it with someone who had been her best friend and was slowly taking that spot in her life again, in a nice home, with her children, without being screamed at.
