Wash out the detangler and use pig oil instead (if you can't get this then just use baby oil, its the same stuff but a lot cheaper).
Instead of plaiting tight in individual braids plait in one long french braid starting behind the ears and finishing at the wither. It is much less 'tight' on the individual hairs but will still stay in place for 4 days or so at a time.
I've kept a mane like this for 3 years and its lovely. Once you are good at the french braid it will only take you 5 minutes to do.
