] Date Posted: 12/12/06 18:05 Some buddhist mates of mine have been quite offended at this site: http://www.chocolatedeities.com/index.php and e mailing the owners even.... I guess the sellers marketing spin is that they are offerings somehow (ahem) I don't even like biting the head off chocolate santas so I'd probably feel particularly odd eating a Chocolate Goddess. Date Posted: 12/12/06 20:29 I don't personally find it offensive... (admittedly I may at first feel a bit funny biting the head off, but then I feel guilty biting the head off of gingerbread men - and I had a chocolate rabbit when I was a kid that stayed 'alive' for years and years lol!!). Come to think of it, I think it's quite fitting for some deities... Some might say that those who take offense to this type of thing (at least it's quality!! not cheap and tacky) are taking their religion way too seriously... but I guess it's different strokes for different folks ;) mmmmmmmm chocolate!! Date Posted: 12/12/06 23:17 For me I guess it is the intention behind this stuff. The chocolate people are not setting out to mock religions with their product but rather chocolate could be a way of connecting with deities even tee hee. As for the Virgin Mary tissues, not sure, bad taste perhaps or harmless fun but what is the point? Victorias Secret (an American lingerie company) ended up pulling a line of bikinis with a buddha on the crotch after complaints. Of course the imagery of deities are beautiful and am sure it was from a purely aesthetic view the product was launched but it was considered hurtful by quite a large number of folks. I guess it depends how relaxed people are around their particular religion's imagery and if people feel the meaning/sacred aspect is diluted when they are consumed by people who have no idea what they mean. Date Posted: 12/12/06 23:39 Well I can't really see the point of the virgin mary tissues - and that could be seen as offensive - at least the chocolate deities have (imo) some positive, practical applications :) There's a difference between wiping your arse with a deity and consuming an appropriate effigy of your chosen deity (like 'Bacchus Wine' - how cool would that be!). Date Posted: 12/12/06 23:48 hmmm... just had a thought on the Virgin Mary tissues... (if used for the nose, not the other end!) - perhaps they could be seen as a 'Blessing device,' considering that many Christians believe that when one sneezes the soul leaves the body and the Devil can jump right in (hence the saying 'Bless You' after someone sneezes). Just a thought.... :) [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |

Date Posted: 13/12/06 13:24 i find it offensive and my hindu family most definitely would be insulted at this. it is finding a way to make money off something that should not be connected to money. sprituality is not materialism or commercialism. it just would not happen in countries where religion is practiced as the root religion such as india or at a time when the pagan religions developed even. well thats what i feel and i feel it strongly. Date Posted: 13/12/06 13:32 Hi Sweetsong (I mean no offense with my question here) does your family use offerings? and let's look at the idea of chocolate deities from a different angle too - let's say you didn't purchase them but made them yourself and used them in a ritual / offering ceremony... how would you feel about it then? (just curious) [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |

Date Posted: 14/12/06 0:04 Well, for my two pen'orth, Once again, It seems that to some, there is no end to the depths that people will sink to for the sake of a quick buck! Can I draw your attention to another little snippet? Although not a religious, belief or lifestyle item, I, as an amateur historian with a special interest in this field find this repugnant also! http://www.thconline.com/titrealsinac.html. Date Posted: 14/12/06 9:02 why would i whitwolf? i would not make a chocolate image out of my parents who i honour more than anyone else. that would be grotesque. if i got it as a gift i would honour the giver and accept graciouslly but would not be that comfortable. i think the commercialisation of religion or spirituality is just horrible and a contradiciton in terms. Date Posted: 14/12/06 13:25 but if you made it yourself it wouldn't be commercialism... ;) (Surely it's no more commercial than someone selling ritual clothing and tools etc...) If you're doing it to honour your deity then where's the harm? Surely it's the spirit and intention of the activity that counts. What about hot-cross buns - these aren't seen as sacreligious by Christians? Is it wrong to buy a statue of the Buddha because someone else made it and you bought it (rather than making it yourself!)? [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |

Date Posted: 14/12/06 13:53 Okay, remember that this is all IMHO, and no offence is meant to any. Okay... I don't see what the problem is. First of all, any deity worth his or her salt - as the most powerful entity in the universe - will not be offended by a chocolate representation of him/her self. To attribute offence to said deity would assume some kind of lack of self-confidence, or of pride. These are not attributes consistent with a being credited with the creation of the entire universe! Secondly, if the offence is to the individual worshipper, then just don't buy the items in question. none of these items are being forced on to people, it's a purely voluntary choice as to whether to purchase / use chocolate deities or Buddha panties. Some people are becoming insulted by such items, and would like the manufacturers to cease and desist. This is very dangerous. Should we be limiting the actions of others based on our religious beliefs? If so, I can guarantee that in many places you will have laws against companies manufacturing anything other than Jesus pics [many believe the UK to still be a 'christian country', so if you want to go down this road, be careful!]. In this day and age [in this part of the world, anyway], it is almost impossible to escape consumerism. How you deal with it is entirely up to you... [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |

Date Posted: 14/12/06 14:59 firstly whitewolf buddha isn't a deity he is a man and i am hindu so can't comment on that. i dont know the buddhists Zenwind is talking about that found offense. are you offended Zenwind? Did you email? i have heard of the dalia lama on apple mac adverts billboards which i did not like knowing about either. selling out perhaps again very disappointing. eating a deity would be destroying the image though which is horrible to me. i see what you mean blackhalk i guess freedom of speech means i can say i am offended if this is due to cultural issues then i guess i have to reflect on that. i do have cultural baggage i realise that. peace [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |

Date Posted: 14/12/06 15:23 I didn't say that Buddha was a deity sweetsong... I merely mentioned Buddha because the site we are discussing has chocolate Buddhas. :) You are entitled to your opinions sweetsong - no-one is saying that you aren't. This is a forum for everyone to write / discuss / read with an open mind. For me, eating a deity would not be destroying the image - rather a taking in of part of that deity. It's all symbolism at the end of the day. [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |

Date Posted: 14/12/06 16:30 In Christianity we symbolicly partake of our deity often as is commanded by the scripture. Some even believe that the bread and wine actually become the flesh and blood of Christ after it is eaten. (The thought of which totally grosses me out. Eww!) So I guess the culture your in would have a great deal with weather or not a chocolate deity offends you. Interesting stuff to think about. [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |
