] Date Posted: 9/10/07 2:14 Why The Catfish Has A Flat Head A Dakota Tale as told by Cat A long time ago, when all animals, birds and fish could speak, a council meeting was called by the Catfish chief. They met in a deep secluded hole at the bottom of the lake. When all of the catfish elders had arrived the chief called the meeting to order and began to speak. "My brothers, I grow tired of always eating what is in the mud at the bottom of the lake! Why can we not have meat like the Wolf tribe does?" There was a ripple of voices from among the Catfish Elder's. "I think", continued the Catfish chief, that we should wait until one of the Moose people comes to our lake to eat. When he wades into the water to eat lily pads we should spear him and kill him for meat! He will feed our tribe for many moons!" The Catfish Elder's looked at one another, then the oldest catfish swam forward. " How can this work? Moose will see us waiting for him and he will not come into the water." He said. Chief Catfish chief nodded and said, "Ah that is a wise question and one that I have thought hard about. Moose comes to the lake at the same time everyday, when the sun hangs low in the sky. The water is darker then and if we are quite and hide among the lillies and grasses he will not see us and we shall be able to spear him!" The Elders agreed that this was a fine plan and swam off to tell the rest of the tribe the plan. Then they all went and hid where the plants grew the thickest and waited. When the sun hung low in the sky Moose arrived and for a time he ate along the bank where the choicest plants grew. Then finally he wandered into the lake and stood. " When he is a little farther from shore" said the Catfish chief, I will spear him and when he is down we will take him!" When Moose was in deep water, the Catfish chief swam at him and speared him as hard as he could! Moose yelled in pain and fear and bucked in the water. " What kind of trick is this? Who has stabbed me??" Moose cried. The he stuck his head under the water. When he opened his eyes he saw the Catfish clan getting ready to attack. "The Catfish tribe is trying to kill me!" bellowed Moose. This made him angry, his eyes became red and his heart was bad toward the catfish tribe. Moose let go his battle cry and said " I will now make war upon the Catfish tribe because they have done me harm! I will trample Catfish chief and people into the bottom of the lake!" With that, Moose began to jump up and down along the dge of the lake. He trampled all of the catfish he could see. His big hooves squashed the catfish deep into the mud. As he jumped Moose roared " I will trample all of you into the mud! You will never harm me again!" When he stopped, all of the catfish were squished into the bottom of the lake. Finally he left, when he was satisfied the he had avenged himself. After Moose had left, some of the catfish managed to escape. They wiggled out of the mud and swam away. To this day catfish still live in all the rivers and lakes but they are much smaller and darker than they were in their grandfathers time long ago. They all have flattened heads as a reminder of the war with Moose. However, they still carry spears and they still hunt, but only at night and only in the mud at the bottom of the lakes.
