We won't wear it' - pagans furious with Trinny and Susannah
By Emily Dugan

They are masters of the humdrum television makeover, but Trinny and Susannah's latest target has exposed them to the wrath of pagan campaigners. The stylists, who were recording the latest series of Trinny and Susannah Undress the Nation, decided to conduct an unorthodox sex change on the East Sussex pagan symbol, the Long Man of Wilmington.

Twenty-two pagans gathered in protest at the historical site where ITV was filming. The show had invited 100 women to decorate the "sacred" site by giving the man temporary pigtails, breasts and hips.

Arthur Pendragon, a Druid battle chieftain, said: "We are very angry because this is so disrespectful." The nomadic 53-year-old continued: "We, the pagans, would not in our wildest dreams consider putting female breasts and clothing on effigies of any Holy Prophets, be it Jesus Christ, Buddha or any other revered figure of another faith. Why then, does ITV commission Trinny and Susannah to do so at the Long Man of Wilmington?"

One of the protest organisers, Druid Greg Draven, 31, from Eastbourne, told The Argus in Brighton they had staged their campaign at the site to make the programme aware of their views. The campaigners were given the opportunity to do this on the programme itself, which will feature interviews with the protesters.

Druid Draven told Trinny and Susannah that there were two reasons he did not approve of their project. "One is the offence to my spiritual belief, because this is a sacred site", he said. "The other is because it is an archaeological site which already suffers from soil erosion."

The concern that the work might damage the historical site was shared by many activists. Their anger at the treatment of the historical relic was further fuelled when it emerged that the crew and volunteers had to be told not to sit on the site's cinder blocks that experts believe date back to the 16th century. But an ITV spokesperson said they were given permission to go ahead with the project by the Sussex Archaeological society, adding that "wardens were present to ensure ITV adhered to the guidelines set by the society. Care was taken to protect this historical site and the figure itself was not permanently changed or affected".

Sussex Past backed up the assertion that the site was left undamaged, saying: "As the site is a scheduled ancient monument, it is an offence to damage the Long Man. Our professional staff judged that the activities involved in filming this sequence, essentially walking and lying on the monument, will not damage the archaeology underneath."

The protest was peaceful, and an ITV spokesperson commented that the pagans were all "happy to be interviewed and just stood and watched".

The stunt was one of many in the series' campaign to "give the great British public a more stylish future". Others included kitting out every woman in an entire town with a properly fitted bra, going down the red carpet wearing a giant pair of fake breasts, and transforming Susannah into a 70-year-old woman.

I feel rather sickened by this lack of respect. Personally I think these two are a pair of pillocks. I would also have expected Sussex Past to be a bit more guarded about allowing such things on National Monuments.
Peeved.

Treating any sacred site in this way is deplorable but I think this whole thing just underlines how shallow the two of them are. And, in fact, how shallow the popular culture of this country has become. A 'stylish future' is just another word for gloss over substance and praising the herd mentality over individualism. Sad that stylishness is deemed more important than the person inside.

Yes it is yucky. Criminal what they have done to a sacred place.

I also don't like the way Trinny and suzanna take it upon themselves to "fix people's problems" while making a cheap buck. At all. But especially by focusing on the superficiality that is the clothes people wear and how they do their hair!! And to get paid to push this message.

They aren't qualified to tinker about with peoples minds the way they do and on TV!! Apart from that you would hope that they would be promoting a different message such as beauty is more than skin deep and stop nurturing this feeling of "lack" within people and the people they get on their shows and those that watch them are brainwashed into thinking image will make them happy!!!!

I was a teenager in the late 70s/early 80s. It was better then, things were not as shallow though I would never have thought things would have got worse in this department. For a woman there was still a sense of the womans movement, that helped me be strong and independent without feeling I need to flaunt myself or wear make up or dye my hair. Now it is as if men are expected to be obssessed with their image aswell otherwise there is something wrong with them and they wont do 'well' in life or get a partner etc. It is a horrible direction to be going in.

I have greying hair I refuse to dye in a long plait down my back. My clothes are from thrift stores or markets. My children cringe at me sometimes that I look older than their friends mums and why don't I dress from the high street. Of course I don't facially look any older it is just they can't see past the images they are getting from TV and school.

Trinny and Suzzanna would have a heart attack to look at me and have plenty of silly superficial advise to dish out. That in itself is an insult to me and patronising. But I feel fine so what the hell.

THE SUSSEX Archaeological Society has apologised to protesters after they allowed a controversial stunt by ITV to give the Long Man of Wilmington a sex change.
ITV and the archaeological society caused fury among Pagans and other protesters when they allowed fashion gurus Trinny and Susannah to add breasts and pigtails to the figure many believe is sacred.

As part of the programme, Trinny and Susannah Undress, ITV asked woman dressed in white to lie on the figure to create the transformation.

Chief Executive Office of the organisation, John Manley, said: 'The Sussex Archaeological Society would like to apologise to representatives of the Pagan community, or any other individual or groups, who might have been offended by recent television filming on the Long Man of Wilmington.

'It was not the society's intention to cause offence.

'The society is proud of its curation of the Long Man

'In future the society will consult
representatives of the Pagan community and other interested parties before sanctioning any significant activities.'

Newell Fisher was one of the protesters against the stunt and has now helped form a campaign group, Guardians of the Long Man.

As archaeological liaison officer of that group Mr Fisher said: 'We look forward to working with the Sussex Archaeological Society to help ensure the future welfare of the site.

'Our confidence in their custodianship has been restored.'

He said the protesters would continue their fight to stop the footage of the stunt being aired.

He said: 'We are absolutely determined this footage should not be shown as we feel it will encourage anti-social behaviour on the site.

'We heard people say they were going up there directly after the filming as the activities seem to make people think it is ok an we are extremely concerned about this.'
