Oh Heather,
Me too..I work with special needs kids too! They are my world really... I love them all to bits...isn't it rewarding when one of them takes notice of you.....
I've been working with one boy for a while and at first he would answer any questions you asked him but wouldn't volunteer anything himself..anyway after a few weeks he started to really open up..at the end of last term when he was leaving he just suddenly shouted 'I'll miss you' to me.. I nearly cried! They have taught me so much more than I could ever teach them......x

That happened to me today as i was leaving to go home, one of the girls who never looks at me shouted bye bye and waved at me as i was going out the door....i felt really special.
My contract finishes next wednesday with this school, i have been there since Oct(im on the supply list and was just filling in for someone who was off sick). I'm going to be so sad to leave, but i must try different support bases in other schools, its so hard not to get attached to these kids though. I cant imagine doing anything else now, i just wish i had done this work earlier but then again i have really enjoyed bringing up my own children(22, 19, 12) or should i say i was lucky enough to be able to stay at home with them. It really is a great job, even though you sometimes get a battering...i got a fat lip from a smack today but it was worth it because she asked me for a drink from her pecs book, i think she was frustrated trying to ask for the water and it getting a bit confusing (still learning sign-along and pecs book).
Keep me posted on how you get on, i would love to hear more.
BIG HUGS AND BRIGHT BLESSINGS, LOVE HEATHER.XXXXX
