Since the release of Dan's latest album, Full Circle, this song has become, for me, the favorite that just won't subside. Just one of many compostions of Dan's, that has found it's way to my heart and soul, but for now it is the most compelling.

A timeless love song, evoking tender but powerful imagery ~ stirring emotions of lonesome, yet hopeful yearning, with a warmth and calm in the solitude and stillness of the night.

Reach Haven Postcard ~ by Dan Fogelberg

Well, the first breath of autumn ~ blows through the trees
And the nights are getting long and growing colder
And the maples are turning ~ and the fields have gone brown
And the waves against the shore make such a sad sound

Now there’s a meal on the table ~ and a fire in the stove
And a candle burning brightly by the stairway
And a lamp in the window ~ that shines out to sea
And I wish so much tonight that you were here with me

Now the moon is in danger ~ of running aground
As she sweeps the tattered clouds above the island
And the stars lay like diamonds ~ on the breast of the sea
And I wonder where you are and if you’re thinking of me

Now I’ve grown so accustomed to having you near
And I miss you so madly when you are not here
When I think how you love me ~ oh, it brings me to tears
And I wish so much tonight that you were here with me
Oh, I wish so much tonight that you were here with me

Well I dropped you a postcard ~ today in the mail
With a picture of a sailing ship upon it
And I tried to say something ~ that was clever and clear
But the only thing I wrote was that “I wish you were here”

Now I’ve grown so accustomed to having you near
And I miss you so madly when you are not here
When I think how you love me ~ oh, it brings me to tears
And I wish so much tonight that you were here with me
Oh, I wish so much tonight that you were here with me

I love this piece. What pictures Dan can paint with words! He captures sights, sounds, scents, and feelings with music and lyrics that seem so simple, yet convey such complexity.

Yes! I love that description - (paraphrasing) painting pictures with words and music. I remember reading an interview where he said he's not a poet, but is pretty good at fitting words to music (something like that). I would agree. Many times poetry, at least for me, is too obscure or too vague, or something (can't find the right word). Well, it just doesn't paint a picture for me, is what I mean. I think some poetry tries to convey simplicity with complexity. But then there are all kinds of poetry, and I love some of it, and what is poetry anyway, I suppose we each define it for ourselves.

I suppose my point is, that what Dan does with words and music always paints a picture for me. I doubt it's ever the same picture he had in his mind, but it's my picture. I think that's what really good music does. Or how each of us decides what really good music is. When it touches you in some way, and allows you to feel something that sparks your own pictures in your mind. Maybe I just need simplicity - and like you said, he conveys complexity with simplicity. That works for me.
