Houston County cultivates national forestry pageant queen
The Macon Telegraph

September 26, 2006

She's just a wonderful person to be around, just very outgoing. Houston County is home to plenty of beauty queens. One more can now be added with the newly crowned 2006 Miss U.S. National Forestry Pageant winner, Kelsey Christine Grubbs.

The daughter of Glenn and Charissa Grubbs of Warner Robins, she is a student at Georgia Southern University, majoring in public relations. She is a 2005 graduate of Houston County High School.

She will receive a scholarship and appear in a national television commercial for the Georgia Forestry Commission. Her platform was 'The Importance of Public Speaking.'

Grubbs, 19, will also be making an appearance during the parade at the 17th Annual Georgia National Fair in Perry on Oct. 7, and will be welcoming visitors at the forestry booth at the fair.

Victoria Lovett is the director and coordinator with the Houston County Forestry Pageant. She is working on getting the word out about the local pageant, which offers scholarship money and opportunities to advance to state and national competitions.

Lovett describes this year's national winner as someone with a bubbly personality and who wowed the judges during her interview.

'You just never see her without a smile on her face,' she said of Grubbs. 'She's just a wonderful person to be around, just very outgoing.'

The national forestry pageant was conducted over the Labor Day weekend at the Tift Theatre for the Performing Arts in Tifton. Fifty contestants competed from Georgia, Louisiana, Alabama, Florida and Tennessee.

In addition to Grubbs, five contestants from Houston County placed in state and national competitions.

At the 67th Annual Miss Georgia Forestry Scholarship Pageant held in June in Tifton, there were 54 counties represented. Winners from Houston County included Little Miss Queen Montana Abrie Cotton, who placed second, Junior Miss Queen Jaeden Alexis Cotton, who placed fourth, and Miss Queen Kelsey Grubbs, who placed first, winning the interview award.

In addition to Grubbs' winning title, other national forestry winners included Tiny Miss Marya Faith Percival, who won prettiest dress and face, placing first; Miss Hospitality Queen Brianna Nicole Redding, who placed third; and Teen Miss Miranda Nicole Slaughter, who also placed third.

The Houston County Forestry Scholarship Pageant will take place March 31, 2007, at the Perry Community Center.

Contestants interested in competing, up to age 24, may call Victoria Lovett at 284-2350. Applications may be downloaded by visiting www.houstoncountyforestry.com or email houstoncountyforestry@yahoo.com

For Miss contestants, the entry fee is $75 plus the purchase of a good luck ad. This competition is a closed pageant, open only to residents of Houston County.

Contestants interested in competing in the baby to Teen Miss categories, open to anyone in Georgia, must pay a $60 entry fee plus a $25 good luck ad. All winners in Houston County have their entry fees paid to the state forestry pageant.

To learn more about this year's national forestry pageant winner, visit the U.S. National Forestry Pageant Web site at http://missusnationalforestry.com.
