Emmy and Golden Globe Winner Ed Asner to star in “FDR” at the Forestburgh Playhouse on July 12th

Performance to benefit summer and educational programs for oldest professional summer theatre in New York State

Forestburgh, NY, July 1, 2010:Managing Director Norman Duttweiler announced today that Golden Globe winner and 7 time Emmy winner Ed Asner would appear in a special benefit performance of Dore Schary’s FDR on Monday, July 12th at 7 PM at the ForestburghPlayhouse near Monticello, New York. The Forestburgh Theatre Arts Center, which is the not-for-profit producing entity at the ForestburghPlayhouse, will present the beloved star in a special performance to benefit both its long time summer season, and its new educational outreach, which will be presenting a contemporary version of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet to area high schools in October.

Mr. Asner has been touring the country in this one man tour de force about President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and is appearing at Forestburgh prior to a one week engagement of the show at San Jose Rep. He is perhaps best known for his comedic and dramatic crossover as the gruff but soft-hearted journalist Lou Grant, the role he originated on the landmark TV news room comedy The Mary Tyler Moore Show and continued in the newspaper-set drama Lou Grant, which earned him five Emmys and three Golden Globe Awards. Asner received two more Emmy and Golden Globe Awards for the mini-series Rich Man, Poor Man and Roots. His prolific and much honored acting career demonstrates a consummate ability to transcend the line between comedy and drama.

One of the most honored actors in the history of television; Edward Asner has been the recipient of seven Emmy Awards and 16 nominations, as well as five Golden Globe Awards and served as National President of the Screen Actors Guild for two terms. He was inducted into the TV Academy Hall of Fame in 1996. Asner received the Ralph Morgan Award from the Screen Actors Guild in 2000, presented periodically for distinguished service to the Guild's Hollywood membership. In March 2002, he was again honored by The Guild as the 38th recipient of the prestigious Life Achievement Award for career achievement and humanitarian accomplishment, presented annually to an actor who fosters the highest ideals of the profession.

FDR explores the life of one of America’s best-loved presidents and the events and decisions that shaped a nation. This powerful play follows the iconic president as he reflects on his years in office, from inauguration to the trials of World War II. FDR features a bravura performance by Asner who takes the audience on a captivating journey through FDR’s White House years from the depths of the Great Depression through the fabled “fireside chats,” Pearl Harbor, and World War II.

The Forestburgh Playhouseis the oldest professional summer theatre in New York State, and presents a full season of musicals and plays in addition to children’s theatre and post show cabarets in the adjoining Tavern at the Forestburgh Playhouse. The Pulitzer Prize winning musical A Chorus Line opens July 6th and plays through July 18th.And the Oscar Goes To…, a tribute to Academy Award winning songs from the movies is the post-show cabaret presented after each evening performance of A Chorus Line. For younger audiences, the Playhouse presents Seussical, the Broadway musical based on the characters from Dr. Seuss every Thursday and Saturday at 11 AM.
