Brad - Roosevelt's advisors were wrong and FDR was right: that short speech had a much greater and immediate impact. This was something Lincoln understood: his farewell speech, his inaugural addresses, the Gettysburg address, and others are all short, most often less than 1,000 words. If one visits his tomb, one can read these as one walks around the corridors to and from the rotunda where he, Mary, Willie, Eddie, and Tad are entombed. Each fits on a single, roughly 2' x 3' bronze plaque.
It seems most political leaders today don't understand that a short, well-crafted speech, is more effective. Clinton, for one, was notoriously long-winded.
