We had two types of school air raid drills: under our desks and standing facing the walls in the halls. I also recall the broadcasts about the Cuban missile crisis on radio and TV. But my most vivid memory comes from years earlier. I lived in a 3-story house atop Putnam Hill in Port Chester and from the attic windows could see Long Island Sound. While rummaging in an attic room, I found a half dozen or so large black shades. My parents told me that during WWII they put them over the windows that faced East to block light from the rooms. On occasion, a German U-boat would torpedo a ship, and my parents could see it burning. Civil Defense volunteers and naval or merchant marine personnel would try to pick up survivors or would watch for them on the beaches. The attic room also held old gas masks and other equipment such as lanterns with slotted tops, again to prevent their light from being seen. An interesting but fearful time for my parents.
