There is a long history of ships sinking in Long Island Sound, however I was not able to find anything about ships being torpedoed in the Sound during WW II.

There were many ships lost to German U Boats off Long Island's South Shore, including the USS Turner, a destroyer, lost off Sandy Hook Point in 1944.
