 Tuckahoe Joe - Thanks for the information & to Ted and Ray for the follow up. I recall a meat market but not the name Fryer's. Such places still exist in cities and some towns -- we have one in nearby Ashland, IL (incredible homemade sausages) -- but by and large local meat markets and green grocers seem to have disappeared as part of everyday Americana. The same for ice cream shops (B-R doesn't count). Though if any of you get to St. Louis, be sure to try the Crown Candy Kitchen. It's been in business since 1913.
