Ah, a change of pace that centers on Japan's most famous monster and who was a favorite on TNT's Monstervision.

I'll cast my vote for the old 1954 b&w Godzilla version, zipper and all. (I didn't have Monstervision.)

Think there might have been two versions of the old Toho Gojira (Godzilla)....one with and one without Raymond Burr narrating.

Saw a bit of newer CG loaded one on a rental maybe...kinda drawn out, and...well, I just preferred ole Gojira.

Maybe fun if we expanded this to other Toho type films, I enjoyed Rodan, and the Mysterians were also good. Then after awhile, the monsters met, had some battles, then a few drinks, they made up...films became way too unbelievable. But early ones were reasonably good as I recall. Nice structural models were made for monsters to destroy. Think Godzilla had the best story though.

The edited version of Godzilla with Raymond Burr premiered in the U.S in 1956, but I didn't get to see it until late 1958 when The Bronx Theater showed it.

The first Godzilla film is my favorite.
I have both versions, Gojira and Godzilla on DVD and I like them both.

In 1960 when I saw "Gigantis the Fire Monster" I thought it was going to be some other monster, but as soon as "Gigantis" appeared, I thought, what the heck is this?? That's Godzilla.

Anyway Gigantis, renamed "Godzilla Raids Again" is my second favorite.

Then I guess it would be "King Kong vs Godzilla" and "Godzilla vs Mothra."

Like Torch, I didn't care for the later Godzilla films when he became a hero and fought different monsters. The films were too silly for me. Had I seen them when I was kid, I'd have liked them a lot better.

Despite the bad reviews, I liked "Godzilla 1985"
I never saw the Japanese version which is supposed to be better than the updated edited American version with Raymond Burr.

As for the newer Godzilla films, I liked them much better than the older silly ones, but not as well as the first four.

And the American film with Mathew Broderick, "Godzilla" (1998) should never have been called Godzilla. I was very disappointed when I saw that.

It was ok as a giant monster flick I guess, but it was not The Godzilla we all know and that soured me on this film.

I agree with Officer Torch and Dan, the original Godzilla (1956, US version) is the best. As a kid I didn't realize that the scenes with Steve Martin (Raymond Burr) had been edited into the American version, which is the version that aired on television in the 1960s and 1970s, and showed up Monstervision and AMC in the 1990s.

King Kong vs Godzilla (1962) was fun, especially for younger viewers. As a kid I also liked Rodan (1956), but when I saw it years later it didn't seem so good.

The various sequels got pretty unbelievable, as Torch said. Destroy All Monsters (1968) was one of the more popular ones, because it included several of the Toho monsters.

Rodan didn't seem as good as before, I meant to say, but it was still pretty good compared to the later 1960s Toho flicks.

The voice actors who worked on the American version of Rodan included a young George Takei, later Sulu on Star Trek.

Like Tim, I also didn't realize that the original Godzilla was edited and Raymond Burr was worked into the film.

It wasn't until the mid-sixties that I found out about Godzilla being edited. I finally got to see Gojira a couple of years ago when I got the double DVD.

I saw Rodan in the theater in 1959 and again on TV about 1963 and I thought it was a cool monster.
A few years ago Rodan was on Cinemax, so I recorded it, but I didn't enjoy it as well either.

The same for Mothra. I liked it a lot when I first saw it, but in later viewings, it didn't hold my interest that much.

I haven't seen "The Mysterians" in over 45 yrs, so I don't how that film will hold up for me whenever I catch it again. I know I really liked it when I was a kid.
