The story is about mountain climbing. The 1930 shorter version is the USA release of the 1929 silent which debuted in Berlin staring Leni Riefenstahl among other notables of the German cinema at the time. The 1930 version I have is by Grapevine and contains some of Heinz Roemheld's music, as in the march of the torches piece used in FGCTU rescue segment in Frigia.

A doctor Krafft and his wife decide to honeymoon in the alps and use a house near the base of the mountain. They wish to climb a tall, dangerous mountain, but are apparently good and adventurous climbers. Things go wrong and his wife falls into a ravine. He is unable to reach her and tries to get help. Time passes, more problems..weather, cold, she is not rescued. The despondent, saddened doctor roams the mountain.

Another couple arrives. The doctor pops into the house surprising the couple. He relates the story. They ask him to be their guide since they wish to climb that mountain. He goes along with it, they journey on, and a strong blizzard approaches. They go thru various problems, and find partial shelter under a ridge. Their clothing is not all that sufficient for this. The doctor calls for help, stays awake, uses his lantern in hopes someone may respond. Apparently, the townsfolk do and gather a search party, to march up the mountain (to the music we know), but they must wait out the storm, which has become fierce.

SPOILER ALERT....SPOILER ALERT.....SPOILER ALERT

The husband gets hurt and is unable to do much. The doctor places a piece of his own clothing on the hurt man. The wife is freezing though, and it is questionable if help will arrive in time. The doctor gives up his own coat to the woman. The stranded folks are eventually spotted, but the doctor, already near frozen from the cold and lack of garments owing to his kindness, climbs higher away from the group to join his wife in the great beyond.

The Kino version (1929 visuals moreso)is much longer and restored, with amazingly clear video BUT it lacks the music FG fans enjoy. Also, the shorter version seems to make it more adventurous, or perhaps the music makes it as such. Both versions are good in their own way. Regardless of version, the photography is just amazing..in spite of todays CG, you'll be impressed by the visuals from that time.
