I loved David Manners in this one. When he had the proper direction, he was a much better actor than he was given credit for.

1. He wryly announces himself as: "Peter Allison, the world's most famous author... ...of unimportant books..."

2. another gem, where he and Joan express their dislike for "wedding food", with Peter saying that "his salad had already been used twice that week"

3. The Chess Game

4. Karloff(God Bless him) presiding st the black mass in exquisite Latin...advising us all to take the proceedings with "a grain of salt".

5. "HAVE YOU EVER SEEN AN ANIMAL SKINNED, HJALMAR...?"

How I LOVE that film...

I think this might have been a major teaming up of Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi. My likes in general, but not necessarily in this order:

-The Chess Game

-The bizarre Satanic mass scenes

-The over the top art deco design/pieces used

-Dr. Werdegast's (Lugosi) statement to Hjalmar Poelzig (Karloff)...it's the red switch, isn't it. (Explosives are beneath.)

-The music
-------------------------------------------------------------
>>While interesting and perhaps genuinely scary/nightmarish, I find it disturbing in some areas. Would NOT recommend this 1934 movie for youngsters, in my opinion.

I haven't seen The Black Cat in a couple of years, and cannot top the examples cited by Joystar and Officer Torch regarding this timeless Karloff-Lugosi classic. What a film!

I always get a chuckle out of the following exchange early in the picture:

Peter Alison: "I don't know. It all sounds like a lot of supernatural baloney to me."

Dr Werdegast: "Supernatural? Perhaps. Baloney? Perhaps not. There are many things under the sun."
