Addison Francis Murphy (James Dunn) is a headstrong newspaper reporter who witnesses a man being thrown into the Mississippi River from the deck of a ferry. Carolina (Andy Devine) is a hillbilly singer who makes the mistake of loaning Murphy money. Carolina winds up as Murphy's reluctant sidekick as the unlikely pair doggedly pursue the killer or killers in this rarely seen whodunit set in New Orleans.

The villain Paul Briand is played by John Eldredge, who also played an unpleasant chap in The Mad Doctor of Market Street.

Herbert Rawlinson is the imposing District Attorney Henry Charters.

James Dunn and Andy Devine get the lion's share of screen time, but Jean Rogers does a great job as the well-heeled Yvonne Fontaine, the daughter of a wealthy banker.

One of the most memorable scenes occurs when Murphy and Carolina are roughed up by thugs and locked inside the hull of an old ship.
