Bride of Frankenstein 1935

Part especially which captures Drs. Frankenstein and Pretorius' expressions in the lab awaiting for the lightning to strike to bring the monster's bride to life. Their facial gestures, the electrical apparatus sparking/crackling noises, kites, the dramatic pulsating music, camera angles, shadows, all come together in...well, actually several good moments in a row.

Dracula (31):
Renfield's arrival at the castle.

Frankenstein (31):
The first appearance of the monster.

The Mummy (32):
The mummy coming back to life.

Bride of Frankenstein (35):
The same scene "Torch" described. And the first look at the "Bride," plus her reaction to the monster.

The moments cited by Officer Torch and Dan are excellent, and among my own favorites as well.

A couple of less famous but still memorable favorites include the initial encounter between Wolf Frankenstein (Basil Rathbone) and Ygor (Bela Lugosi) in Son of Frankenstein.

Also the very beginning of House of Frakenstein when Dr Niemann (Boris Karloff) reaches through the cell door window to surprise the guard.

I saw "Son of Frankenstein" when it was re-issued about 1945
-- and I was about 8. Then as now, the greatest moment was
Inspector Krogh's confrontation with the Monster. Simply
unforgettable.

Yes, Lionel Atwill as Krogh was quite a scene stealer in that picture, a wonderful performance.

It must have been interesting to see one of the movies from the Frankenstein series while the series was still ongoing...House of Dracula came out in 1945, and Abbott and Costello meet Frankenstein in 1948.

I didn't see any of them until the 1960s, on television.

The first Universal horror film I saw was Dracula. That was way back in 1957 on Shock Theater in NYC. I was 8 years old.

A few more Universal Horror Moments:

Werewolf of London:
Hull's tranformation to werewolf when he walks past those pillars.

Son of Frankenstein:
When the monster found Ygor after being shot by Wolf. And Krogh having his wooden arm ripped out.

The Mummy's Curse:
The scene where the reincarnated Princess Ananka comes back to life in the swamp.

Shock Theater had a big impact, bringing all the old horror movies to a new young audience via the (relatively) new medium of television.

Tim...in my area, we had "Chiller" with opener showing a hand rising from a grave maybe, and several host type "scary movie" shows....a biggie was Zacherly, and some others. It is interesting to reminise about the old time shows. Not much like this around....so my friend, we may be showing our age. You know, it would be nice maybe for a horror like version of TCM to show some of our old favorites, or some Public TV or access channel, with of course suitable warnings to keep the little ones from getting frightened. Naturally, after all such viewings, regardless of age, one should check for monsters under the bed before goin' to sleep.

The Shock Theater package was a little before my time. Chiller was another famous one, and Zacherly seems to be one of the best-remembered of the early horror hosts, along with Vampira from the west coast. John Zacherle is his real name, and I believe he is still alive. I didn't grow up on the east or west coasts where the more famous hosts worked, but in the 1960s and 1970s there were some great "scary movie" shows in my area, with some pretty cool hosts.

Geez, where to begin...!

The introduction of the Monster in "Frankenstein"; also, the murder of Dr. Waldman

The awakening of "The Mummy"

The unveiling of "The Invisible Man"; also, the scene later where, wearing only pants, he skips down the road singing "Nuts in May"!

Just about ALL of the 1934 "The Black Cat"! And MOST of "The Bride of Frankenstein"!

Lugosi's delicious performance in "Son of Frankenstein"

The drowning of Vincent Price's character in "The Tower of London"

A tired, wounded, Vincent Price borrowing the scarecrow's clothes in the "The Invisible Man Returns"

An electrified Lon Chaney Jr. breaking out of the deathhouse in "Man Made Monster"; also his death scene

"The Wolf Man" -- Nuff said!

Dracula's coffin emerging from the swamp in "Son of Dracula", also the scene where the doctor encounters the undead woman in her bedroom

The discovery of the Monster and the Wolf Man in the ice in "House of Frankenstein"...also, the death of Daniel and the quicksand finish

Jon Hall VS John Carradine and his protective, unseen dog in "The Invisible Man's Revenge"

Kharis carries his rapidly aging, reincarnated love into the swamp in "The Mummy's Ghost"

Dracula's seduction of the nurse in "House of Dracula", and the frenzied chase through the village of the 'vampirized' doctor

Some great selections there, Alan. Rathbone and Karloff drowning Vincent Price in a wine vat was one of the more memorable scenes in Tower of London (1939). After they close the lid Rathbone says, referring to Price's fondness for wine, "He wanted his malmsey..."

Hi, Tim!

Thanks, and I enjoyed your choices as well. It's been a pretty long while since I've seen any of those scenes, yet it's remarkable how burned into my brain they are!

I'll be pulling out the old films soon though, because my oldest grandkids are getting close to 'old enough' for their initiation. That leads me to a new thread I'm going to post, and I'd definitely enjoy some feedback...
