I am wondering if the girls that participate in pageants like Miss Univere or Miss World are allowed to have cosmetic surgery. Don't they have to be all natual or is it not necessary at all? Ramona sure seems like she had some work done to her face. Can anyone answer that? Thx

Natalie gets kiss to the city

By JACK BOLAND, TORONTO SUN

Miss Universe Natalie Glebova and Mayor David Miller share a warm moment last night at the Holiday Inn on King St. (Veronica Henri, SUN)

It was a universal blunder when Toronto's own Miss Universe was given the bum's rush from Nathan Phillips Square in July.

But Mayor David Miller kissed and made up for it and more last night when he bussed the statuesque Miss Universe, Natalie Glebova, 23, a former Ryerson University student.

The mayor and Glebova shared a few intimate moments last night, exchanging gifts at a private booth at the Canadian Bar and Grill at the Holiday Inn on King St. W. before she was whisked off to the red carpet gala for the premiere of Atom Egoyan's Where the Truth Lies at Roy Thomson Hall.

"I thought he was such a wonderful man, very understanding, very approachable and very friendly," said Glebova, dazzling in a deep purple empire-style dress created by New York designer Genes and silver strappy heels by Steve Madden.

SWAPPING GIFTS

"We exchanged some bracelets. I gave him one from my AIDS foundation and he gave me one from Princess Margaret hospital," said the Russian-born beauty, who now calls Toronto home.

Miller was making right a faux pas from mid-July when Glebova tried to take part in the Tastes of Thailand festival at Nathan Phillips Square.

She was asked to leave the premises because of a 1990 bylaw that banned tiaras and titles from the festivities.

TRADING JOKES

The two exchanged parting jokes, with Glebova telling Miller she was thinking of making him a rhinestone encrusted sash with the word "Mayor" on it to replace his mayoral chains.

"Mine isn't as elegant as yours," Miller said.

After the meeting, Miller said Glebova was "very smart, charming, intelligent."

"She works very hard on something, that I strongly believe in, which is to prevent the spread of AIDS," Miller said. "I gave her a red bracelet from Princess Margaret hospital. My mother died of cancer and was treated there. So Miss Universe gave me her cause's bracelet which is much nicer," Miller said. "But mine is close to my heart."

Glebova will be in town until Sunday before travelling back to New York City and then jetting off to Thailand and Malaysia.

Top 5 advancing to MUC 2006
Fanny Samaniego
Shaileen Stanley
Lori-Anne Phillpots de Lisser
Marta Zientarski
Alice Panikian

Top 10- Semi Fialists
Lucie Novakova
Genida Prifti
Katie Laskowska
Pamela Whitney
Sylvia Adamcik

My brief review:
The show was overall very well done. The intro dance number was cute with a jungle type music. I wasn't a fan of the swimsuit music however.

I pretty much agreed with the final 5 choices. Give or take 1 or 2 girls. But overall the top 10 was almost exactly as I suspected.
None of the ladies blew me away. I would say Lori-Anne was the best as far as stage presence goes.

Italian MPs overwhelm their Canadian colleagues at 'Battle of the Parliaments'
By Alan Patarga

The resistance of the Canadian Parliamentary team lasted more or less three minutes, last week on the Centennial Park field in Etobicoke, where it clashed with a team of Italian Deputies and Senators.
However, the celebration lasted over three hours, amidst hugs, photos, soccer and the noble cause of the Universal Youth Foundation, an organization founded and chaired by Mario Cortellucci to assist poor youth all over the world. The Italian team has certainly dominated the game, burying Canada under an inequivocable 7-1. The result was heavy but nobody found it unjust: not the Italians, of course, nor the spectators who enjoyed the game (played in two 30-minute halves), nor even the Canadian team, well aware of being at a disadvantage.
Canada's three minutes of glory came at the very beginning, when MPP Tim Hudak - playing forward - managed to score their only goal. But just four minutes later Italy evened the score with a nice shot by Carolina Morace, the only woman in a team of men, former captain and current coach of Italy's women's national team. The music changed with her goal and with those of the Italian bomber, AN Deputy Luca Bellotti from Veneto, who scored three (28th f.h., 4th and 12th s.h.): he also missed two other goals, one in each half.
The final tally, as we said, was 7-1, with two different goalies defending Canada's goal: MPP Kevin Flynn, who suffered all seven Italian goals, and Vaughan mayor Michael Di Biase, who managed to avoid taking any more. Di Biase was not the only Italian-Canadian who held his own on the field: Federal MP Maurizio Bevilacqua and Senator Con Di Nino brushed up on techniques learned a few years ago. Real technique, however, was displayed by star player Bob Iarusci, former captain of Team Canada and former teammate, in the New York Cosmos, of Giorgio Chinaglia and Pelé. This is the summary of the "Battle of Parliaments", as the event was nicknamed by its organizers. Even Peter MacKay, Tory vice-leader, took to the field, even though minister Belinda Stronach wasn't in the bleachers to watch the athletic prowess of her former fiancé and former party colleague.
The public included other VIPs, such as UYF president and former MPP Annamarie Castrilli and UYF treasurer and former RCMP Chief Superintendent Ben Soave. Castrilli explained the objectives of the charity that managed to put the two Parliaments against each other on the field and together in the solidarity for unfortunate children. "Our purpose is to build schools for disadvantaged kids in various corners of the world. Education can be their opportunity to come out of poverty."

Charity was the protagonist the following night at the Renaissance Banquet Hall, with a big gala dinner attended by the MP-players, the organizers and many supporters.
For someone, however, the forte of the event was the chance to see from up close (and have pictures taken with) Miss Universe, Torontonian Natalie Glebova, a dark-haired lady of Russian origin and a beauty to leave people breathless. She's the godmother of the Universal Youth Foundation, whose officials also include Emergency Preparedness commissione Julian Fantino and former Supreme Court judge Frank Iacobucci.

As to Miss Glebova, she acted like a magnet, as everybody tried to get near her: members of the public, players of both teams, coaches, and literally everybody else.

Consul General of Italy Luca Brofferio gave a brief speech thanking those in attendance and advocating increasingly cordial relations between Canada and Italy, thanks also to events of this kind. The 300 or so in the hall, judging from their enthusiasm, seemed to like the idea.

“BATTLE OF PARLIAMENTS” SOCCER MATCH A WIN FOR WORLD YOUTH
INAUGURAL GALA FEATURING MISS UNIVERSE, TEAMS TONIGHT

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Toronto, August 5 /PR Direct/ - A cross-Atlantic soccer match between Canadian and Italian Parliamentarians ended with a score of 7 to 1 in favour of the Italians and a win for world youth. Team Canada made a valiant effort, scoring the first goal of the game. Taking place at the Centennial Stadium in Toronto, the soccer match was in support of the new Universal Youth Foundation (www.universalyouthfoundation.com). Founded by philanthropist, Mario Cortellucci, the non-profit organization is committed to providing educational assistance to children and youth in need throughout the world by funding schools and teachers. In addition to elected officials, players included Canadian Soccer Hall of Famer, Robert Iarusci and the Coach of the Italian National Women's Soccer Team, Carolina Morace.
"It was a pleasure to play in support of the Universal Youth Foundation here in Canada, a country rich in diversity, compassion and the warm-heartedness of its people. My teammates and I look forward to celebrating our great Canadian experiences tonight at the Gala hosted by the Foundation. I would like to congratulate Mario Cortellucci and the Universal Youth Foundation for taking the important intiative to provide hope for world youth through education," stated Senatore Roberto Salerno, Captain of the Nazionale Parlamentari Italiana Soccer Team.

The inaugural Gala of the Universal Youth Foundation will take place tonight at the Renaissance Parque Convention Centre in Vaughan, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Under the theme, "Back to School for Children who don't have Schools," the event will raise funds for Foundation. The Gala, which experienced an overwhelming response of generosity from the public, will feature Miss Universe, Natalie Glebova and blind performing artist Simone Soman, renown for her dynamic and energizing repertoire.

Subject: Toronto: the laughable city

Author:

by Arthur Weinreb, Associate Editor,
Tuesday, August 2, 2005

Once known as "the livable city", Toronto the Good is quickly becoming "the laughable city". Last week, two men were ejected from the Rogers Centre during the 3rd inning of a baseball game between the Blue Jays and the Angels. They were deemed not to be wearing appropriate attire.

The co-host and producer of the television show "Ed’s Night Party" attended the game and had the colossal nerve to show up wearing Ed the Sock t shirts that said, "I’d rather be a smartass than a dumbass". Presumably, it was the word "ass" that was too much for an usherette. After the men refused to turn their shirts inside out, they were thrown out of the Cable Box.

After they were booted, they were invited to meet with Blue Jays CEO Paul Godfrey who apologized and invited the guys back for another game. Actually Godfrey owes them two games as the one that they were ejected from went 18 innings, the most number of innings played in Blue Jays’ history.

While this incident did not garner a great deal of publicity, it followed closely after Toronto resident and reigning Miss Universe, Natalie Glebova, was barred from appearing at the home of the homeless, Nathan Phillips Square, wearing a tiara or anything that signaled that she was a beauty contest winner because under a city bylaw, anything that might be demeaning to women is barred from the grounds of Toronto City Hall.

There is, of course no direct connection between Toronto’s municipal government and the Toronto Blue Jays. The Blue Jays’ Paul Godfrey did, however, spend most of his adult life as a municipal politician in Canada’s largest city. Coincidence? I think not.

Of course Godfrey did apologize, but then Toronto’s mayor David Miller also apologized to Glebova. Godfrey’s apology came much more quickly than the one that Mayor Miller issued but then there was never any doubt that when it comes to quickness, Paul Godfrey has it all over David Miller.

It stretches credulity that one lone usherette took it upon herself to have two guys who dared to wear the word "ass" on their shirts, thrown out of the Rogers Centre. She was obviously following some idiotic politically correct policy that defines the word "ass" as an obscenity.

Incidents like these, if they continue, will likely do more harm to tourism in this city than the occasional shoot out at Yonge and Dundas or the necessity of tourists having to step over homeless people when they choose to walk rather than sit in cars on our gridlocked streets. Toronto is spending big bucks on tourism. Despite the stupidity of the campaign being centered on Toronto’s new slogan, "Toronto Unlimited", much like the movie, "Plan 9 from Outer Space" it is likely to be effective because it is so bad. But all this public relations work will be for nothing if silly and ridiculous incidents like banning Miss Universe or the removal of the offending t shirt wearers from a professional baseball game continue to happen.

What makes these situations worse is that they are all based upon political correctness. The major city in the land of tolerance and diversity won’t tolerate a tiara or the word "ass". Yet nudity is a good thing if it occurs in a festivity during Pride Week.

At least Torontonians can be grateful for one thing. Mel Lastman is gone and we don’t have to listen to Toronto being called a world class city three times a day. There is nothing world class about Toronto these days.

MACKAY, BEVILACQUA AND KLEES TOGETHER TO PLAY SOCCER FOR WORLD YOUTH
“BATTLE OF PARLIAMENTS” TO SUPPORT UNIVERSAL YOUTH FOUNDATION

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Toronto, July 28 /PR Direct/ - A team made up of Italian Senators and Members of Parliament will be coming to Toronto to play their Canadian counterparts in a cross-Atlantic soccer match billed as the "Battle of Parliaments: Kick-off for Youth." Team Canada players include Peter MacKay, M.P., Frank Klees, M.P.P. and team captain Hon. Maurizio Bevilacqua M.P. The match will begin at 8 p.m. on Thursday, August 4th at Centennial Stadium, 56 Centennial Park Rd., in Toronto (south of Eglinton Ave., west of Renforth Dr.).
The teams, who will be playing in support of the newly launched Universal Youth Foundation (www.universalyouthfoundation.org), will be welcomed at the stadium by over 1000 children and Miss Universe - Natalie Glebova.
Founded by philanthropist Mario Cortellucci, the Universal Youth Foundation is committed to providing educational assistance to children and youth in need throughout the world by funding schools and teachers.
A Gala Dinner Dance honouring the players will take place on August 5th at the Renaissance Parque Convention Centre in Vaughan, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Under the theme, "Back to School for Children who don't have Schools," the event will raise funds for the Universal Youth Foundation. The Honorary Chair for the evening is Julian Fantino, Commissioner of Emergency Management and Former Chief, Toronto Police Service.

The soccer match will be the first opportunity for the Italian parliamentary soccer team to travel to North America to raise funds for a worthy cause. In the past, the team has raised funds for such causes as the south Asian tsunami relief effort.

BERNADETTE MORRA

Paris Hilton comes to town and we close off Queen St.

Miss Universe returns home and she is publicly dissed by officials at city hall.

Mayor David Miller has apologized. Natalie Glebova, the Russian-born Torontonian crowned in Thailand in May, has moved on. But Miss Universe officials, and many others, remain baffled. Especially in light of the fact that Toronto has just spent $4 million on a campaign promoting our city to the world.

"Everywhere she goes, Natalie tells people that they've got to come to Toronto, that it's such a beautiful place," says Paula Shugart, president of the New York-based Miss Universe Organization. "It's silly not to embrace the fact that she is promoting your city."

The absurd ban, which prevented Glebova from appearing at a Thai event at Nathan Philips Square on the weekend, resulted from a bylaw intended to prevent the objectification of women.

No doubt there's a cheesiness associated with beauty pageants which are, after all, the original reality shows. But it's time for an update on what Miss Universe does.

"Miss Universe started 54 years ago as a swimsuit competition," Shugart explains. "But the title is much deeper than people realize." Every Miss Universe takes on a charitable cause and can log up to 1,000,000 kms raising awareness and funds.

Glebova has zeroed in on AIDS, so her first major trip was a fact-finding one to South Africa where she visited orphanages, had a very public AIDS test (the result was negative), and lunched at Bishop Desmond Tutu's home. Upcoming travel includes Malaysia, Thailand, India and Brazil, culminating in Rio de Janiero on Dec. 1, World AIDS day.

It's all part of the Miss Universe mission to present its winners as role models who are savvy, goal-oriented and aware and who seek to improve the lives of others.

"Pageants have morphed considerably over the last 20 years," concurs Connie McNaughton, president and CEO of Miss World Canada Inc. "They aren't really beauty pageants anymore. Miss World's motto is beauty with a purpose. We've raised over $350 million for children's charities."

A new Miss World Canada, Ramona Amiri of Vancouver, was crowned at the Holiday Inn on King on Saturday night. In the days leading up to the main event, she and 29 competitors raised $17,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society through car washes and the sales of T-shirts.

Beyond fundraising, Shugart sees pageants as a great career opportunity. "One Miss Universe became governor of a province in Venezuela. We have two who are goodwill ambassadors for the U.N. and two who are MTV veejays. Yes, we still have a swimsuit competition. But we're much more than just that."

A few years ago, Shugart was listening to then-Miss USA make a speech on the importance of early detection of breast and ovarian cancer. "I thought I should practice what we preach so I went and had a mammogram. I found out I was in the early stages of breast cancer. I never would have done that if I hadn't heard her speech.

"Not every culture is going to love the beauty pageant culture," Shugart admits. "All I ask is that people be somewhat respectful because Natalie is a good person and a hard worker. She's been averaging four hours sleep a night for the last three weeks. But she's a trouper. She says, `let's just move on.'"

Toronto Mayor David Miller did not find time to meet with Miss Universe 2005 Natalie Glebova during her homecoming week in Toronto but he did the worst when he cancelled Miss Universe public appearance at the cultural festival of Thailand scheduled on July 16.

We elect such politicians and we get what we deserve.

Surprisingly, organizers of Thai festival silently agreed with the Mayor failing to cheer up Miss Universe in her own town.
At the same time the Thai Government is bidding for hosting Miss Universe 2006 in Bangkok. What a double policy!

On the light note, the same day Natalie Glebova attended Salsa Music Festival held in Toronto on St. Clair street and she was cheered up by huge audience.
She told about her experience of being Miss Universe and said a few words in Spanish (that she likes Salsa music).

T.O. mayor misses out on Miss Universe

James Cowan
National Post

Saturday, July 16, 2005

TORONTO - During her brief reign as Miss Universe, Natalie Glebova has met Bishop Desmond Tutu and Donald Trump, visited orphans in Thailand and mines in South Africa and posed for photographs with the Queen of Swaziland and Kenneth Cole. But she has yet to meet Toronto Mayor David Miller.

Yesterday, at Toronto City Hall, she was treated more like the hometown girl she once was than the international pageant queen she has become.

At a news conference, Gloria Lindsay-Luby, chairwoman of the city's economic development and parks committee, presented Ms. Glebova with a metal keychain and business-card holder.

Ms. Lindsay-Luby praised Ms. Glebova as a "Toronto Ambassador." "At every stop around the world, she tells the Toronto story," she said. "She tells the world how great our city is, she brags about our multiculturalism, our culture and our attractions."

Despite Ms. Glebova's diplomatic role, Ms. Lindsay-Luby was the only Toronto politician to attend yesterday's photo-op. Indeed, the councillors' lounge where the event was held was mostly empty, except for Ms. Glebova's entourage, some Tourism Toronto staff and seven journalists -- all male.

Arriving slightly late, Ms. Glebova was easily identified. Not by her stunning beauty, but by the sparkling silver "Miss Universe" sash that has apparently been stapled to her body.

In addition to the knick-knacks from the city, the 23-year-old pageant winner also received a hat and large T-shirt from Tourism Toronto, each emblazoned with their new "Toronto Unlimited" logo. (The group's Elizabeth Gill said the new Miss Universe is "truly everything that Toronto represents.")

An official scroll presented to Ms. Glebova yesterday recognized her commitment to make combatting HIV/AIDS a priority during her reign.

"You help to enrich the quality of many lives," the scroll read. "Thank you for caring and giving. Many people share and celebrate your accomplishment.... You make Toronto proud."

Ms. Lindsay-Luby denied the city had been tardy in its recognition of Ms. Glebova.

"This is the first time she's been back to Toronto since she's been crowned," she said.

Meanwhile, the beauty queen presented Ms. Lindsay-Luby with a gift of her own: a small plaque from the Miss Universe organization affixed with a crystal the size of a ping-pong ball.

Born in Russia, Miss Universe and her family immigrated to Canada when she was 12. Eleven years later, Ms. Glebova graduated from Ryerson University with a degree in information technology management. She hopes to start her own business.

Crowned 46 days ago, Ms. Glebova has yet to be congratulated by Mr. Miller. The Mayor had a "longstanding personal commitment" that kept him from yesterday's ceremony, spokesman Patchen Barss said.

"She's an accomplished woman -- pianist, composer, information technology manager. She deserves congratulations for all of those accomplishments," Mr. Barss said.

Oddly, he did not explicitly cite Ms. Glebova's pageant win as one of her accomplishments.

For her part, Miss Universe forgave the Mayor's failure to get in touch.

"From what I understand, I'm sure he's very, very busy," Ms. Glebova told reporters. "I know how proud he is. We're all proud Canadians, we're all proud of our fellow Canadians' achievements."

Ms. Glebova added that she does brag about her home as she travels the world.

"I tell people about how you can walk down the streets and you can hear so many different languages spoken and you can see so many ethnic restaurants," she said.
