Chapter 3:
16 April
Mac was up early on Monday morning and was preparing for her practice and lecture day at the range. She took advantage of the time difference by calling into Bethesda asking for an appointment with a female OB/GYN. She was assigned Cmdr. Sally Truman and was given an appointment for the following Monday.
Harm placed a call to Mac at 22:00 local finding her returning from the chow hall. He asked how her practice day was on the range and everything seemed to be OK. He asked when he could pick her up Tuesday night when she flew in and she told him she would take a cab because it would actually be early morning on Wednesday before she arrived. Her cab costs were taken care of by JAG so it was not a concern.
17 April
Tuesday came and went and everybody was active and busy. Mac reported she had shot expert again and was happy with the result. Harm reported that Victoria and Laura’s symptoms were improving rapidly now that they no longer used the old cleaner. They talked of many things before the call was finished.
Harm finally got in bed about 23:00 after everyone else settled down. He wrestled around a bit and finally removed his pajama top because it was a bother. Harm heard the front door lock turn at about 03:13 and heard the sound when Mac threw her keys on the table in the foyer. He settled back down knowing it was her instead of an intruder. He debated getting up and going home since she was now home but decided against it because she did not come up stairs immediately to let him know she was home. He decided to wait and see. He heard her go thru the refrigerator and sensed that she was comfortably taking her time. Later he heard her come up stairs and check on every one of the kids before coming into her own bedroom. He was prepared with the only defense mechanism at his disposal; he acted like he was still asleep. The room was dark except one small night-light in the bathroom.
She came to the bed and stared and looked him over for the longest time. She gently moved her left index finger across his lips as he slept. She turned and sat on the cedar chest and removed her uniform and her underclothing. She stood naked and moved and sat at her nightstand. He watched as she took a comb and brush to her beautiful long hair. He watched her graceful naked form as her muscles and breasts moved about as she brushed every strand 20 times. Even though her initial intent was to quietly join him in her bed, she just knew she needed more than that if she was going to get any sleep. His bare chest and sexy body was driving her up the wall. Harm rolled over and shut off the alarm a few minutes before it was going to ring and turned to face her as she slept. She stirred because she could feel his gaze upon her. Her eyes opened and a smile came over her face.
(H) Good morning Mac.
(M) Good morning to you. Thanks for last night.
(H) When did you get in? What did I do?
(M) Let’s just say that your hands and mouth became good friends with certain parts of my body and now I won’t need to go to Baltimore for a few weeks.

Harm kissed her lips slowly and lovingly and then kissed each of her breasts thru her nightgown. When she finally let go of his head, he went to the bathroom to find his robe and head for the kitchen. She stared at the ceiling wondering where that came from. Mac stopped by Harm’s office at 17:05 as she was wrapping up the day’s left over details and sat to talk.
(M) Everyone sends their thanks for all your help. My kids have selected and appointed you as their new surrogate father. I frankly think they made a good choice.
(H) So you are OK with that? I don’t mean to butt into your life but I can’t resist your kids. They are fun to be around and I kinda have a thing for their mother.
(M) I am OK with it. You know you are welcome anytime. So, what movie are you taking me to?
(H) I thought you forgot about that. You never said anything.
(M) The more I thought about it, the better it sounded.
(H) Find out what day over the weekend Jerry will be home before 19:00 and I will throw in dinner as well. You get to pick the flick.
(M) Your on. I’ll report back tomorrow. Goodnight. See you in the morning.
Harm left a few minutes after Mac and made it back to his place. It was good he didn’t have a pet or a plant because he had not been there for 5 days. He could get used to sleeping in her bed, more especially if she was in it. He day-dreamed a little as he started the washer and found something to eat. The apartment was so quiet it seemed unfriendly after being with the children. He admitted to himself that life with the kids was more fulfilling than the peace and quietness because of who their mother was to him.
21 April
Saturday night came and Harm was excited about dinner and a movie with Mac. He picked her up on time, to the complete approval of 3 very interested children, and started for the nice restaurant he had chosen. She asked him where they were going and told him she was more of a “beltway burger” type of gal and asked him if he minded. He adjusted his driving and ended up in the largest one in town. They went inside and decided what both wanted. He stood in line as she found the best table. They sat and talked about everything that had been going on and he brought up the subject of summer camp for the girls. That was a surprise to her because she had never let them be away from home and her for more than one night, ever. Since the cost had always been a factor, she used that as a way to end that conversation.
They enjoyed the movie she had chosen and both felt totally comfortable after it was over as they made the drive to her place. He took her to the door and thanked her for the date. She invited him in and he agreed to a cup of tea. They sat talking and finally got quiet and listened to the twins as they were talking quietly in their room. They heard of feelings about their older brother (uncle) and how much they were going to miss him. They talked about school and later about the relationship that was beginning between their mother and Harm. Mac was surprised that her girls talked about the possibility of Harm marrying their mom and becoming their father.
Harm and Mac quietly opened the front door and went out on the front porch.
(M) I think you have stolen the hearts of my twins.
(H) I enjoy your children. You know you are their hero, don’t you?
(M) Yes I do. I wonder what that was about missing their older brother.
(H) Will you call me if you find out what is going on?
(M) I think we should tell the Admiral we are dating as soon as we can.
(H) Monday morning?
(M) Yes. First thing after I get back from the doctor. Goodnight Harm.
(H) Doctor? What is wrong?
(M) Nothing really, I need all of my normal checks and I need to get on birth control pills if I decide in your favor.

Mac drew his head down to her and slowly kissed him and backed away slightly and ran the tip of her tongue slowly over the total surface of his lips. She could feel the goose bumps form on his arms. {God I love it when he responds so quickly to me.}

Sunday was filled with house cleaning, bed making, and preparations for the coming week. The kids chipped in and did what their mother asked and the day went better for everyone. Sarah finally learned the secret Jerry was keeping and had to call Harm.
(phone ringing)
(H) Rabb.
(M) Jerry has been accepted to the academy. He got his letter yesterday. We need to take him there June 11 for orientation and familiarization for the summer.
Harm asked Mac to put Jerry on and made a major fuss about his acceptance. Harm made him promise to call AJ just as soon as he got off the phone because it would be important for the Admiral to hear about it.
The Admiral listened to the good news and asked him all kinds of questions. They had a good bonding session.
23 April
Mac left from the house and went directly to Bethesda since her appointment with Dr. Truman was at 09:00. She signed in and filled out what seemed like every form in the whole U S Navy. All kind of questions were asked and she took her time. When she got to the place where it asked the reason for the appointment reality set in big-time. She was here to get on birth control pills so she could get it on big-time with Harm! Since she couldn’t really put that down, she put in annual check-up. She was called back and the doctor did the Pap test and moved her to another area and had them perform a mammogram. Her blood was taken and she was sent back out in the lobby. She sat there for what seemed like forever before being called into the doctor’s office a second time.
(Dr) Major, your Pap test, mammogram and blood test were all fine. You are healthy and in good shape. I have a feeling you have other reasons for wanting the checkup.
(M) Yes, I have a new man in my life and want to get on birth control now in case the right time might arise for us.
(Dr) Has he had a checkup recently?
(M) I don’t know and really don’t know how to find out. I could ask but I don’t know how that would be received by him.
(Dr) Is he another marine?
(M) No. Navy. Harm is my new partner.
(Dr) Harmon Rabb?
(M) Yes, do you know him?
(Dr) Yes. Almost every Navy woman knows of Harm. I met him at the Navy Ball when I was there with my husband. His old partner, Meg Austen, came to see me for about the same reason you did. It didn’t do her much good though because she found he only thought of her as a kid-sister.
I have to admit though; if I wasn’t married he would be at the top of my list. I hope it works out for you.
After you get this prescription filled, read the directions carefully. It takes about 2 weeks before you are completely covered. Be careful during this time. I will see what I can find from Dr. Thomas who is the flight surgeon Harm regularly sees and I will give you a call. His flight status would be suspended if he was infected in any way.
(M) His involvement in this will be kept confidential, won’t it? It might never happen but again it might under the right circumstances.
(Dr) Not a problem. I’ll call you.
Mac stopped at a pharmacy on her way to the office and had the prescription filled as she waited. She talked to the pharmacist and took the first pill at the water fountain. She arrived at the office at 11:35 and walked into Harm’s office to find if she had missed anything.
(H) Did the doctor’s appointment work out OK?
(M) Everything is OK and she gave me a clean bill of health. How are you in that department?
(H) The doctor said I was fine when I saw him in February and I haven’t been with anyone since. Did you enjoy the burgers and the movie?
(M) Yes, very much so. I told you that Saturday. Why do you ask?
(H) I thought it would be fun to take the girls and Jerry to the zoo this coming Sunday, without you have other plans.
(M) None that can’t be changed. How early would you want to go?
(H) How about I pick you guys up at 10:00 and we can have lunch at the neat little deli they have there named “Sally’s.” We could be back home by 18:00 for one of your casseroles and a movie.
(M) I’ll talk to everyone but it sounds good to me. Thanks Harm. We should go talk to the Admiral now if you are still ready to tell everyone that we are an item.
Harm agreed and followed her to Tiner and asked to see the Admiral. They were admitted and the first subject of interest was Jerry’s acceptance. They talked thru the details before the Admiral asked what they needed.
(H) We wanted to let you know that we have started seeing each other…….dating.
(M) We understand that it needs to stay out of the office but request that we not be assigned to oppose each other. It might be seen as a conflict of interest and Harm has been teaching me to be more aggressive in court and it might cause hard feelings.
(AJ) Does this mean you two are exploring a long term relationship or is it just casual?
(M) Long term, sir. Harm seems to be winning over my whole family.
(AJ) Thanks for telling me. I have no objections as long as you follow the rules.
(H) We will sir.
Harm and Mac left his office feeling like one more obstruction had been taken from their path. Mac’s declaration that she thought they were exploring a long term relationship did not go unnoticed by Harm. He remembered clearly that she had said she didn’t have any time or interest in a long term relationship when explaining about Uncle Harry. Harm felt new hope for their future.
They spent the better part of Sunday at the zoo and everyone had time to be their selves and bond together. Harm could hardly remember what his life had been like before Mac and her children took it over. Sarah MacKenzie was the cause of more cold showers than he cared to remember but he did not want to ever be without her.
Harm and Mac worked together and dated more for the following two weeks. She had received a call from Dr. Truman saying that Harm was in good health which made her feel better since she had been counting the days. AJ had taken Jerry to the marine base at Quantico one Saturday and to the Naval Museum last weekend.
9 May
Wednesday morning arrived and all Mac could think about was that it had been 16 days since she had started the birth control pills and she was having trouble concentrating on anything other than Harmon Rabb Jr. She tried her best to sit next to him in court without jumping him. She made it a point to brush up against him and touch him when she thought it would look appropriate. After their time in court, she went to the break room for coffee and found him there. They made small talk but Harm sensed her general unease and asked:
(H) Are you alright?
(M) Not really, but I want to talk to you about it before you go home.
Harm agreed and both returned to their offices to finish the afternoon.
Mac was finished early and continued puttering around her office waiting for Harm to finish but he was still working. She waited as long as she dared to before making her way to the bathroom to prepare. She entered his office quietly and waited to get his attention.
(H) I’m sorry, have you been waiting to speak with me?
(M) I have, I have good news and bad news for us. The good news is that I have decided to take you up on your proposition. The bad news is that I have a parent-teacher meeting in one hour and 23 minutes. Since everyone else has left, I want and need you now if we can do it quickly.

(S) I don’t know. I don’t want them too far away. Let’s talk tomorrow.

The next week was devoted to work and getting Jerry ready for his move to Annapolis.

Sarah arrived about 30 minutes later and was ushered straight to the bedroom. Both were lying in a sweaty haze 45 minutes later when Harm raised a question.
(H) I have known you for four months and I just realized in all that time we have not had a serious fight or even harsh words to each other. That is some kind of record for me. How about you?
(S) I know. You can thank your mother for that. During the 2 days I spent with your parents, she gave me operating instructions for you.
(H) Operating instructions?
(S) She told me “what makes you tick” and what you expected in a girlfriend and a wife. Since there are not many men left that value women like you do, I think a future with you will be interesting.
(H) I agree and I like the way you are going about it. By the way, I meant every word I said to you a few minutes ago. You are definitely the best lover I have ever had and I am developing strong feelings for you. Now, if we can just learn how to stay engaged during our most passionate moments.

During the following week they found time for each other one more time in the supply closet. Jerry had final exams the three days after Memorial Day so the planned celebration was kept to only one afternoon on Memorial Day. AJ, Harm, and Sarah invited all of their friends from JAG to join in a barbeque in AJ’s back yard so they could hear about Jerry’s appointment and meet the twins. Everyone had a great time and noticed how Harm and Sarah had evolved into a couple.
Jerry finished the semester at Georgetown with good grades and had a week off before they had to take him to Annapolis. It took some extra fancy dancing but Harm and Sarah got the week off and everyone loaded the jeep for a trip to Grandma Sarah’s farm.
They were warmly received and had to move beds around so Harm and Jerry shared one room, the twins in another and Sarah by herself. Sarah and the twins spent special hours with Grams and bonded as stories were told and lives exposed. Harm and Jerry worked around the place fixing things they found on Gram’s Honey-do list. Harm and Sarah took walks with the twins and enjoyed the peaceful farm. Grams watched and knew that big changes were happening in her grandson’s life.
