She turned, glaring at Harm, and said, "Are you sure you want to do
this?"

"Bring it on Marine".

The proverbial gauntlet had been thrown.

Facing the others, she said, "I know why he's pissed off at me and
I'll address that later. What I fail to see is what in the world I
could have done to warrant such treatment from the four of you?"

Sturgis cleared his throat, Bud mumbled something unintelligible and
Harriet looked down at her feet, fidgeting with her hands.

Coates, being either incredibly brave, or incredibly stupid, lifted
her head and replied, "You hurt the Commander ma'am. He gave up
everything for you and he got nothing but grief for his trouble! You
didn't say anything in his defense when the Admiral wouldn't give him
his job back! Just what did you expect us to do ma'am? Throw you a
party?"

" A party wouldn't have been necessary, but even *half* of the
concern shown the Commander would have been appreciated", Mac
replied. "And for the record, I *did* speak to the Admiral privately
on numerous occasions, petitioning to get the Commander reinstated. I
did so, risking the Admiral's wrath, even though he (pointing at
Harm) refused to return my phone calls!"

The other four stared at Harm, who shifted in his seat. He was
starting to feel increasingly uncomfortable. "Uh, Ma'am," began
Bud, "What about what Commander Turner told us happened in Paraguay?"

"Ahhh… Commander Turner, not only have you picked up Harm's nasty
habit of directing snide remarks my way, you've begun telling
unsubstantiated tales out of school," said Mac.

"Colonel, I take offense to that statement. I got my information
directly from Harm, the proverbial horse's mouth, so to speak, "
Sturgis claimed.

Mac looked at him, narrowing her eyes and said, "I'm sure you got it
from some part of the horse's anatomy Sturgis, but I highly doubt it
was the mouth. I'm guessing, if it came from Harm, he was talking
from a place much closer to the tail".

Turning towards "the four" again, she continued, "You all work in JAG
Headquarters. Two of you are attorneys for crying out loud! Whatever
happened to innocent until proven guilty? Hell, for that matter, what
happened to there being two sides to every story? How is it that as
an 'alleged friend', esteemed colleague and supposed member of
the 'family', that you all afforded me less courtesy than you give
your clients?" her voice had risen with each question, while her tone remained even.
It's that voice that made her such an effective
litigator.

The room was deathly quiet...

Mac was so furious she couldn't see straight! Tears literally stood
in her eyes. 'I will not cry. I will not feel. I will not allow them
to hurt me. I'm a Marine dammit!' Turning away from them for a
moment, she repeated this over and over until she regained control.

"Uh, Ma'am", said Harriet, "I'd like to hear about what really
happened in Paraguay, if you want to tell me about it".

Shaken out of her reverie, Mac turned to Harriet and said
faintly, "Oh Harriet, it was awful. I never wanted anyone to know".
