You were talking in complete sentences at 9 months??? Wow, that's amazing!!!! It is especially amazing when you consider that oral motor skills necessary for speech are not even close to being fully developed at nine months. Nine month olds can barely chew food! Did you know that producing some speech sounds actually requires teeth? Yes, teeth do start to appear at a very young age; however, the average child gets his/her full set of baby teeth at age 3. Let's not forget to discuss language. Babies do have amazing brains, but please remember that language is extremely complex and not completely understood by nine month olds. Unfortunately, humans haven't evolved to a level that would allow us to use language before actually learning it. In other words, nine month olds can not say complete sentences because they can not understand an entire sentence. Just for your information, children do not even put more than one word together until the age of two. At two years old, children only put two words together. For example, a two year old might say, "big ball." That's it!! Just two words, literally. Also, two year olds only have an expressive vocabulary of 50 words. They may understand more than 50 words, but they are only able to correctly use 50 words. There are children who develop language and speech skills earlier than others, but not that early! It is physically impossible for a nine month old to have enough control over his/her brain, lungs, vocal cords, throat, tongue, and lips to produce an entire sentence. If you could only understand the complex process and coordination that humans must use to utter a single sentence, you would know that no nine month old could actually talk in complete sentences. Most are learning to say single sounds (like da and ba), and most can not even say one word. Saying the first word usually happens at 12 months. I'm sorry, I just can not believe that you spoke in complete sentences at nine months. I guess you are wondering what makes me think I know what I'm talking about. It is what I do for a living. I have a bachelor's and a masters in Speech and Language Pathology, and have been practicing in the field for 7 years. I am certied by the American Speech, Language, and Hearing Association. Yes, I do know what I am talking about. Parents are welcome to visit www.asha.org for information on speech and language development. You can also find information about hearing and hearing loss at this website.
Kelly, I hope this information gives you some peace of mind. You have a beautiful daughter, and I believe you are a great mother. My mom was a single mom, and I thank God for her everyday. She is my hero! Emma Kelly will think of you the same one day. God bless!
