I am not sure what this award is for, I have seen it given many times and always thought it was for whoever the judges and directors or the directors themselves thought stood out but just didn't have a good day. Although, the last several I have seen given out seem to be friends of the directors, It seems like the directors were honest, and did not change scores for their friend's child to win, but felt bad about it and gave them the choice award so as not to upset them. I think this award may be defined as--(you have done their system many times, talked to the directors and have become friends with them, you're child didn't do all that great that day and may have been in a bad mood, the directors therefore think you're child deserved to win had they had a better day and don't want to hurt your feelings so you get the "choice" award.) I could be wrong, but this seems to be what this award is for

Where we live it is known as "the participation trophy." Most systems (HT,Sunburst etc) don't want you to walk away empty handed so you get that if you don't place.

A participation trophy is totally different than a directors choice award. A participation trophy is given to all contestants in the big systems like Cover Miss and Sunburst. Other systems give this for kids that come in last place, the ones that don't place in the age group, basically the samething as your top 10 awards in pageants that have 4 runners up, if they have 12 or so, they give a top 10, which are participation trophies with another name.
Directors choice awards are just that. My husband calls them "pitty titles"...lol, our daughter won Nes's Grand Ambassador which is a directors choice award. It is given to the contestant/s that stand out the most, that try hard, are friendly and are most memorable that weekend.

Hi, My daughter recieved this kind of award, and I personally asked about it. It is usually for a child that really stood out and maybe didn't model good or got cranky on stage. Autumn won first alt. but won this award. The director said that the scores were a difference of 1/2 point and it was a tough call. I hope this helps.
