A/N: better late than never, however I changed Mac to Bud in the quote

Harm: Love isn't baseball, Mac.
Mac: How would you know?
(Washington Holiday)

It was a rare occurrence that hadn’t happened in many years, it was the Memorial Day weekend and no one was TAD. The suggestion was made to celebrate the holiday with a picnic at a local park. Everyone agreed to attend. There would be food grilled and after dark they would have great seats to watch the local fireworks. Someone suggested a game of baseball, soon there were two teams. It was talked about all week in the office. It seems the two teams had become very competitive.

Finally the day of the picnic arrived. As the teams prepare to meet on the field of competition Harm noticed a slight hesitation with one of his team members and a shy little boy hiding behind said team member. “Is there a problem Bud?”

“Sir, I’m really sorry about this, AJ heard Harriett and me talking about the game this week and he wants to play. I tried to talk him out of it, but he has his heart set on playing on our team.”

“That’s okay Bud; I don’t think anyone will mind.” Harm replied as he squatted down to AJ’s level. “So AJ you want to play ball with us?”

Stepping out from behind his dad, AJ’s shyness disappeared. “Yes, sir, I was really good on my tee ball team this year.”

AJ looked around for the other team and didn’t see one, than became alarmed at what he did see. Pointing at his mom and the other women of JAG “Hey what are they doing?”

“That’s the other team.” Harm said matter of factly.

“We can’t play them” an absolutely horrified AJ blurted out. “Love isn’t baseball, dad!”

“What are you talking about AJ?” Bud asked, surprised at his son’s statement.

“You love mom, Uncle Harm loves Aunt Mac and he (pointing to Sturgis) loves her (pointing to Varis). You won’t tag them out and you’ll let them score runs.”

Harm stepped in to set the record straight, “Trust me AJ, love doesn’t have anything to do with this game, we came to win, when we take the field we play to win.”

Three innings later it is girls 3 and boys 0.

Sitting on the bench AJ frowned as he looked at the scoreboard, “See I told you.”

“AJ you just have to have faith, we are letting them get comfortable with the lead and them we are going to blast them out.” Harm didn’t know if he was encouraging AJ or trying to psych himself into action, it was plain as the nose on his face they were being beat by girls.

As Harm got up to bat Bud quietly asked, “Sir, I appreciate what your doing, but don’t you think it’s time to start hitting?”

“I’m trying Bud but that petty officer is a good pitcher. Are we sure she with JAG and not a ringer?”

“She’s been with JAG for 2 years, just never been here for Memorial Day.”

“Well this time she’s going down.”

“Yes sir”

SWISH

SWISH

SWISH

Harm went down swinging.

Two innings later the girls were up to bat – the score now 5 – 1, little AJ managed to hit the ball and make an inside the park homerun. (Who said there was no love in baseball?)

Mac’s turn at bat, she hit a single. While Harriet was coming to the plate to take her turn, Harm, who was the first base man, tried a little blackmail on Mac.

“You know Mac you are really letting our godson down with all theses runs, he really wanted to win this game.”

“Well Harm if you boys would hit the ball it would actually be a game.”

“Well if your pitcher would throw something we could hit maybe we could score.”

“She’s pitching just fine. You just haven’t managed to make it to first base. Really Harm, I didn’t think you had a problem scoring.”

“Oh I know how to score” he said to himself under his breath “Maybe I’ll have better luck after the game.”

Mac heard him. “I doubt it, all the blonds are spoken for.”

Smack, Harriett hit a single.

“Gotta go.” Mac headed toward second. Harm missed the catch at first to get Harriet out and Mac advanced to third.

The girls went on to win 7-2 (little AJ managed to score again).

Hoping to smooth the loss Bud commented, “Maybe next time we play mixed teams, sir.”

Unaffected by the comment, Harm replied, “Maybe next time we play flag football.”

After the game, the group split up and began to grill and get the food ready to eat. Harm and Mac were working together to make sure the food from the coolers were placed on the tables.

“Harm”

“Yes Mac”

“When little AJ was explaining about why the girls couldn’t play baseball you didn’t disagree with him.”

“How would you know?” Harm asked then realized, “You heard that conversation?”

“Yes.”

Harm proceeded to explain, ignoring one part of the conversation. “I did disagree, I told him that it didn’t matter once we took the field and it didn’t, at least for our team, I’m not sure about your team since AJ managed to get an inside the park home run and score on a walk.”

Mac clarified her point. “You didn’t argue when he said you loved me.”

Harm looked directly at Mac “That’s because I don’t argue with the truth.”

Surprised at the ease with which his statement was made Mac looked at Harm in disbelief than saw the truth on his face and her eyes misted.

Harm was surprised at her reaction but did what he always did, he took his hand, cupped her chin and wiped her tears, “Hey, there’s no crying in baseball
