Subject: Living out fate Chapter 2

Harm and Mac's house
July 27th

Mac opened the door to their house and almost stumbled on a box. Harm's things had arrived four days after he moved in, and he still hadn't unpacked. Mac maneuvered around several more boxes before she reached the living room.

“Harm?”

“In here.”

Mac followed the sound of his voice to the kitchen. “What did you do all day?”

He offered a shrug as he continued to set the table. “Good news. A.J and I found the perfect office space today. We're interviewing secretaries tomorrow,” Harm said.

“Congratulations,” Mac said as she almost stumbled on another box. “So, when will you unpack?”

Again he shrugged. “This weekend.”

“That's what you said last weekend too,” she pointed out. “I'm taking a shower.”

Harm watched her leave the kitchen. “I'm going to do it, Mac.”

“Sure you will,” she yelled back as she headed for the bathroom. It took her five minutes to realize that maybe she had been a little unfair to him. He did have stuff to do, and he still had Mattie's surgery to worry about.

Fifteen minutes later she was calm as she walked to the kitchen. “Let's eat and then I'll help you.”

He looked up from one of the boxes he had opened. “Look, do you remember this?”

It was the picture of them in Afghanistan. She had the same picture on the desk in her office. “Of course I remember.”

“Those were good times, huh?” he said with a smile as he found another one. “And this is from the time I took you up in the F16, and you threw up.”

“Not the best memory,” she admitted.

He laughed. “You look sexy in the flight suit.”

“Thanks,” she said sweetly. “Sorry about before. I've had a long day.”

He put the picture down. “That's okay. I promise you I'll finish unpacking this weekend, okay? Besides, it's probably hormones.”

She glared at him. “Don't even go there.”

“The Doctor said it was normal,” he reminded her. “But I can live with it, if It gives us a better chance of conceiving.”

Mac had gone through another laporoscopi after she saw a specialist who thought he could increase her chances of conceiving. Now she was on fertility drugs to help the process.

“That's noble of you,” she said with sarcasm.

He ignored her. “Why don't you sit down. I made pasta.”

“Harm, stop handling me,” she warned. “Just treat me like you always do.”

“Well, ever since we've been a couple I have treated you like this,” he defended himself.

“Then treat me like you did before that,” she said.

“I'm confused,” he said honestly.

“I don't want you to treat me like a housewife,” she explained.

“I don't do that,” he argued. “Just because I'm nice doesn't mean that I don't respect you just as much as I did before we got together. Now will you sit down and eat, damn it.”

She hesitated. “Wow, are you sure you're not the one with the hormones?”

This made him laugh. He walked over to her. “You know what Mackenzie, you don't get dinner.” He lifted her up in the air and threw her over his shoulder.

“Harm! Put me down,” she yelled.

He laughed as he carried her across the living room, upstairs and into their bedroom. He dumped her on the bed. “We need to settle this argument,” he said as he got on the bed and kissed her senseless.

Mac was laughing so hard, she couldn't speak. “Okay... Okay...”

Harm pulled on her sweater. “I think we need to remove this.”

Mac couldn't have agreed more. “I love you, Harm.”

He smiled as he kissed her sweetly. “I love you too.”

Twenty minutes later Mac was in Harm's arms relaxing after their lovemaking. She wondered about Harm's unwillingness to unpack.

“Harm, about you unpacking...”

“Mac I'm going to do it this weekend,” he said as he sat up. “I promise.”

“But why have you been avoiding it? When I talk about your boxes and all the furniture you have in the garage you always find an excuse not to start,” she said as she to sat up.

He hesitated. “You remember how long it took me to actually decorate my apartment after I finished fixing it up, and when I finally did I got the lady at the store to pick everything out for me and decide where to put it,” Harm continued.

Mac laughed. “You're kidding?”

“No, I swear I'm not. I hate decorating,” he said.

“How did I not know this about you?” she wondered with amusement. “Here I thought you actually had good taste in furniture.”

Harm shook his head. “Nope, no opinion about the matter,” he said as he reached for Mac's hand. “But after dinner I will make an effort for you.”

Mac kissed him sweetly. “You are amazing Harmon Rabb Junior.”

“Don't I know it,” he said as he pulled her back down on the bed.

The next morning Harm whistled as he walked downstairs. He was in a great mood despite that they had gone to bed late the previous night. Mac had helped him empty his boxes and they had carried in his furniture and decided where to put everything. In the end they had both been pleased with the result, even though Harm had to admit that he had let Mac take the lead on every decision.

“Good morning,” Mac said as he walked into the kitchen. “Why are you up this early?”

Harm kissed her sweetly. “I couldn't sleep without you.”

“Aw, that's cute,” she teased.

“I'll go for a run, and then I'll spend the day with Mattie. Tomorrow is a big day for her,” Harm said.

“I'll be there tomorrow too,” Mac said as she prepared to leave. “I just hope the expert has good news for us.”

“Me too,” Harm kissed her again. “Have a nice day.”

“Love you,” Mac said.

Harm smiled as he watched her go. “Love you too.”

Mac's office
An hour later

Mac offered a sweet smile when Jennifer Coates walked into her office. The young girl was effective and organized and Mac couldn't understand why General Cresswell had agreed to let her follow Mac to San Diego.

“Good morning, ma'am,” Coates said. “Here's the information you wanted. And Lieutenant Commander Roberts is here.”

Mac stood. “Let him in. I have ten minutes before court.”

“Yes, ma'am,” Coates said and left the office.

Commander Bud Roberts walked in with a smile on his face. “Reporting as ordered, ma'am.”

“At ease Commander. Welcome,” Mac said as she continued gathering what she needed for court. “I won't be able to show you around myself, because I'll be in court all morning. Coates will show you to your office and introduce you to the rest of the staff. Everyone except from Major Heart is here. He's away on assignment.”

“I look forward to get started, ma'am,” Bud said

Coates appeared in the doorway. “Your husband is on line one, ma'am.”

“Take a message, Coates,” Mac said as she walked to the door. “Show Commander Roberts around and introduce him to the rest of the staff.”

When Mac walked into the bullpen around lunchtime, the first person she saw was her husband. He was standing with his back to her talking to Bud and Jenn, but she knew it was him.

He smiled when Mac approached. “Do you have time for lunch?”

“Yes,” Mac said and offered a questioning look. “I thought you were spending the day with Mattie?”

“She was tired and wanted to take a nap,” he explained. “I thought we could pick up something and go check out our new office space.”

Harm and Mac said goodbye to Bud and Jennifer and walked outside, where he took her hand and led her to his car.

“How was court?” he asked as they drove off.

“I didn't know I had missed it so much,” she said.

“Being in charge isn't as fun as you imagined?” he teased.

“It's not that, I actually like that part too, but I have to make time to actually work on cases. I don't want to get rusty,” she explained.

Harm drove by a little Chinese restaurant they both enjoyed and from there he took her to a building about twenty minutes away from Mac's office.

Harm parked the car. “It's not huge, but we have enough space to get started.”

Mac followed him inside the building. Harm walked her through all the rooms and explained what they were thinking, and Mac was impressed by what she was hearing.

“And we talked to Harriet about coming to work for us part time, maybe two or three days a week. She's still thinking about it, so we'll just see what happens there,” Harm said as he took her to another office. “This is mine.”

“I'm surprised Harriet is considering it at all, she seems so happy being home with the kids,” Mac said as she looked around.

“It was Bud who mentioned it to us actually. Apparently Harriet had been dropping hints about going back to work part time,” Harm explained.

“I hope she does it. You need someone to run this place and to keep you in line,” Mac teased.

Harm laughed softly. “So what do you think?”

“I'm impressed,” Mac said honestly. “And I'm really proud of you. Not just because you're starting your own firm, but for taking care of Mattie and getting married.”

“I guess I finally am ready to let go,” Harm said honestly as he looked around his office. “And I'm actually looking forward to taking a stab at the real world. Being a civilian lawyer is going to take some getting used to.”

Mac walked over to him and put her arms around him. “You'll do great.”

“Thanks,” he said and kissed her sweetly. “As for taking care of Mattie and marrying you, that was easy decisions to make.”

They shared a passionate kiss and both jumped to attention when they were interrupted by A.J.

“Necking in the office already?” A.J said with amusement.

Mac blushed. “Congratulations.”

“Thanks Mac. It looks like we are ready to get started,” A.J said proudly.

“We were just about to have lunch, do you want to join us?” Harm asked.

“I'd like that,” A.J said.

They all walked to the break room where they shared lunch and talked about old times.
