Mattie's hospital room
August 14th

Mattie was happy that Harm wouldn't come by that day. He had called earlier and said that he and A.J had to meet with potential clients for dinner, and he didn't know how late it would be. She had told him not to worry about it and that she'd see him the next day. Her upcoming surgery had put a strain in their relationship.

“Mac, do you think I'm making a mistake?” Mattie asked as they shared a pizza.

“It's a risky surgery, Mattie. Dr Mitchell is the best, but still...” Mac hesitated, unsure if it was her place to have an opinion.

“Mac?” Mattie questioned. “You still haven't told me what you think.”

“I guess I don't want to impose,” Mac admitted.

“You are my guardian too, Mac. I know we don't know each other that well yet, but you are the reason why I got to live with Harm in the first place. I want your opinion,” Mattie said.

Mac nodded. “I know you and Harm disagree. And please don't hold it against him, because he's only this way because he loves you. Harm is very protective of the people he loves, it's one of the things I love the most about him. I understand why you want to have the surgery, and deep down Harm understands too. He's the master of taking chances,” Mac said honestly.

Mattie looked thoughtful. “I don't want to disappoint him.”

Mac smile warmly and reached for Mattie's hand. “You can never do that. And if you ever do, he'll support you anyway.”

“Talking from experience?” Mattie teased.

Mac laughed softly. “I really do.”

Mattie squeezed Mac's hand. “Thanks, Mac.”

“Any time, Mattie,” Mac said and squeezed back.

“I think we just had our first real mother daughter moment,” Mattie said with a sweet smile.

Mac smiled back. “I think so too.”

Harm and Mac's house
Later that night

Mac looked up from her book when Harm walked into the living room. He was very handsome in his dark suit, and she was pleased to see that he was wearing the tie she'd bought for him for his first official day running his own firm.

“Hi,” he said as he leaned down and kissed her.

“Hey,” she said and dragged him down on the couch. “I missed you today.”

He pulled her close. “Me too.”

“How did it go?” she wondered.

“I think it went well,” he answered thoughtfully. “We'll get the answer tomorrow.”

“Tomorrow is a big day,” Mac reminded him.

“How was Mattie today?” Harm wanted to know.

“Nervous about tomorrow, but very positive,” Mac said with a proud smile. “She's very brave.”

Harm nodded. “Yeah, she really is. I haven't been thinking clearly when it comes to the surgery, have I?” he wanted to know.

Mac smiled. “Not really, but we still love you.”

He chuckled. “That's good. Tomorrow I'll tell her how proud of her I am.”

“Good,” Mac said.

“How was your day?” he asked as he loosened his tie.

“I got my period today,” Mac said.

He hesitated. “You did?”

“It wasn't much chance of us being successful the first month,” she reasoned.

“Are you okay?” he asked with worry.

“Yeah, I'm fine,” she said with a weak smile.

“We will make it though,” he said with conviction.

She entwined her fingers with his, studying their joint hands. “I hope you're right.”

“I love you,” he said.

She smiled. “You have no idea how much I love you.”

The next day
Mattie's hospital room

Harm knocked before he and Mac entered. Mattie was sitting up in bed and smiling when she saw them. She looked happy and he regretted how he had acted. She was brave and she wanted to take a chance and he had to support her.

“Ready for your big day?” Harm said as he leaned down and hugged her.

Mattie gladly accepted the hug. “I guess. I'm nervous though.”

“That's understandable,” Mac said and hugged Mattie too.

“You'll do great, Mattie,” Harm reassured. “And I'm sorry about not being supportive. I understand why you want to do this.”

“That's okay, I know you're just worried,” Mattie said with a sweet smile.

They were interrupted by a nurse. “Ready Mattie?”

“I guess,” Mattie looked at her parent's. “I love you guys.”

“We love you too,” Harm said and hugged her again.

“See you when you wake up,” Mac said as she too hugged Mattie again.

Harm took Mac's hand as they watched Mattie being wheeled away. “I guess all we can do is wait then.”

Mac nodded. “She'll be fine.”

An hour later they walked outside to get some fresh air and find a place to have lunch. Harm was tense and Mac was doing her best to keep him preoccupied.

“There's a small cafe down the street,” Mac suggested as they walked.

Harm didn't answer, he just kept walking like he hadn't even registered that she had spoken. Mac took his hand and made him stop. “What?”

Mac smiled. “I suggested the small cafe down the street,” she said and pointed.

“Yeah, sure,” Harm said with a shrug.

Mac tugged his hand. “Let me in, Harm.”

He hesitated. “What if the surgery will damage the nerve? She'll be tied to a wheelchair for the rest of her life. We have to have construction done to the house, get a new car...”

“Stop,” Mac said with a sweet smile. “Harm, you have to have faith that she'll be fine. Mattie is a fighter, she'll walk again. I'm sure of it.”

Harm relaxed a little. “Thanks, Mac.”

“It's what I'm here for,” Mac said and kissed him sweetly. “That and to make sure that you eat something.”

Harm smiled. “Okay, lead the way.”

Two hours later they were back at the hospital still waiting when Dr. Mitchell walked over to where they were seated. Harm and Mac both stood, both reaching for the others hand.

“The surgery was a success,” Dr Mitchell said with a huge smile. “I managed to remove the pressure on the nerve without complications, and I'm sure Mattie will be running around soon.”

“Thank you so much, Doctor,” Harm said and offered his hand.

After Dr Mitchell left Harm turned to Mac and kissed her deeply. “I love you.”

“I love you too,” Mac said with a happy smile, tears streaming down her face.

Later when Mattie woke up after her surgery Harm and Mac was by her side.

“Did it work?” Mattie asked.

Harm smiled as he leaned over his daughter. “It was a success.”

Mattie smiled tiredly as her eyes slowly shut. “I knew it,” she mumbled.

Harm and Mac shared a sweet smile.
