Lost Chapter 11

The characters aren't mine...
Mistakes are...

Lunchtime
Pablo's

Mac arrived early, but was seated right away. It was Pablo himself who greeted her and he expressed concern about what she had been through. Mac reassured him that she was fine.

As she waited for Harm she wondered how many times they had shared a meal together at Pablo's. It was their place, not that they had ever discussed it, and Mac had never brought another man to this place. She wondered if Harm felt the same way about Pablo's as she did.

«Sorry, court ran late.» Harm was suddenly standing right beside her.

«No problem,» Mac reassured and smiled when Harm kissed her cheek.

«Have you ordered?» Harm wondered as he sat down.

«No, I was waiting for you,» Mac said just as Pablo arrived at their table.

After a small chat with Harm, Pablo took their order and left them alone.

«I'm sorry about this morning,» Harm said.

«I understand,» Mac reassured. «You haven't told me about the case you're working on. Anything good?»

«It's a rape case. And it looks like my leave will be canceled. Something unexpected has come up, and I need to do some investigating this weekend. The judge has granted me the weekends to find out what happened on board the ship the night of the rape. It even looks like the Captain might be involved,» Harm explained.

«That doesn't sound good. I wish I could help,» Mac said with a pout.

«You'll be back at JAG before you know it,» Harm reassured. «I'm sorry about our trip though. I've been looking forward to it.»

«Me too,» Mac said.

The food arrived and they had a nice lunch together. As they left the restaurant and walked to their cars, Harm asked what Mac would do during the weekend.

«I have a followup appointment with my Doctor tomorrow, and then I have an appointment with Dr. King afterward. Saturday I'll go see my Mom, and maybe I'll stop by Harriet and Bud on Sunday,” Mac said.

“Maybe I'll see you Sunday night then?” Harm asked hopefully.

“That sounds like a plan. When do you leave?” Mac asked.

“Tomorrow morning,” Harm said as he held the car door open for her. “Do you want an overnight guest?”

Mac smiled. “I do.”

Harm kissed her quickly. “I'll see you later then.”

Harm's office
Later that day

Harm was just about to wrap up for the day. He was eager to get to Mac's place. He smiled as he stood and gathered his belongings.

“You're in a good mood for someone who had to cancel his leave.”

Harm turned his head and saw Sturgis Turner in his doorway. “No need to cry about it.”

Sturgis laughed softly. “You've been in a good mood all day. Something is going on.”

“Can't a guy be in a good mood without being questioned about it?” Harm asked teasingly.

“Not when it's you. What's up?” Sturgis questioned.

“I just like my life at the moment,” Harm said secretly. “Have a great night, Sturgis.”

“Come on Harm, spill,” Sturgis pleaded as he followed him to the elevator.

“It's non of your business,” Harm said as the elevator doors opened and he hurried in and pushed the down button. “See you.”

Mac's apartment

Harm whistled as he cleaned up after dinner. He started the dishwasher and headed for the living room, as he walked past Mac's work table, he noticed several pictures and stopped and looked. The picture he picked up was of a very young Mac, she was smiling and holding flowers in her hands.

“This is cute,” he said. He continued to see through the pictures and found one of Mac and what must have been her father. Mac had to have been two or three years old and she and her father had matching smiles on their faces.

“I've been a little nostalgic today,” Mac admitted.

Harm smiled. “You were born beautiful. What brought this on?” he asked as he joined her on the couch.

“I don't know,” Mac said honestly. “My mom told me that my Dad was a very nice guy until he started drinking. After he was discharged from the Marines he changed. The reason why she could forgive him for all his bad moment was because she knew how bad Vietnam was for him. She stayed with him for ten years even though he was horrible to her. I don't understand that. My grandma died when I was six, and after that I couldn't run to her place to hide when he... I should have stopped him instead of running away.”

“Mac, you were a little girl,” Harm said.

“I wonder why he didn't hit me. After my Mom left he still drank, but he never hurt me except from his words. He even tried to help me with my homework and burned toast for me in the morning so that I'd eat breakfast. Of course it always ended with me making him breakfast because he never could keep the toast from burning,” Mac said with a smile.

“Why did you run away?” Harm asked.

Mac smiled a little. “I met Chris. He was handsome and he had a motorcycle. Every girls dream,” she teased.

“Aha,” Harm said with a smile.

“Chris wasn't all bad. He dropped me off at school every day. And he treated me good. He was running with a bad gang, but he never dragged me into anything illegal,” Mac explained.

“He almost had you convicted of murder,” Harm said.

“I killed him,” Mac said tiredly. “I could have handled that better.”

“It ended well,” Harm said and reached for her hand. “We all make mistakes Mac.”

“I guess we do,” she agreed. “What about last night? Was that a mistake?”

Harm dragged her in for a kiss. “Last night was the smartest thing either of us ever did.”

Mac smiled. “Really? So where are we?”

“I guess we should talk about that,” Harm said and turned serious.
