Lost

Chapter 1

A remote area in Afghanistan

Mac smiled as the little girl in front of her started singing. The girl's mother explained to Mac that her Afsoon was singing because she was thankful for what Mac was doing for them. The woman had lost her husband one week ago because he was helping the American troops, and Mac felt that they had to give something back. Mac and Lt. JJ. Mack, who's soldiers had survived because of Afsoon's father's help, had decided to give the woman and her daughter food supplies, and other things like clothes and medicines, and they had brought it to them before Mac traveled back to the Navy ship later that day.

Mac told the woman that they were happy to help, and for her to take good care of herself and her daughter. A little while later they were driving back to base camp and Mac was happy that her time in Afghanistan was about to end. She had been sent to investigate the death of two Afghan girls that had been raped and murdered, and it turned out that an U.S soldier was guilty. It had ben a dreadful case, and Mac was exhausted.

«Do me a favor, ma'am. Drink a cold beer for me when you get home?» JJ asked.

Mac laughed softly. She had come to like the young man that had been escorting her around for over a week now. «It'll be a non alcoholic beer then, Lieutenant.»

JJ was about to reply when gunfire were heared, and the car stopped abruptly. «Everyone out,» he yelled. They took cover behind the cars and returned fire. Mac's internal clock told her that they used exactly four minutes to disarm their enemy.

As the gunfire silenced a big explosion happened and Mac felt her body fly a few feet before she landed on the ground and everything was dark.

Commander Harmon Rabb Junior had just finished a big case and was actually looking forward to have a weekend of flying and relaxing. With Mac away JAG had been busy, and even Sturgis Turner had started complaining.

«When's Mac coming back?»

Harm shrugged his shoulders. «Why does everyone think I know?» he asked.

«Because you always know where she is,» Sturgis said.

«Well, this time I don't know much I'm afraid. I got an email yesterday, but nothing today.» Just as he had said that Admiral Chegwidden walked into the bullpen. «Attention on deck!»

«At ease. I'm afraid I have some bad news. Four Marines has been reported missing in Afghanistan, among them was also Lt. Colonel Mackenzie.»

Harm forgot how to breath. Mac was missing.

«I have very little information at this time, but I will share what I know when I know it. In the meantime we continue to do our job and trust that the men and women over there are doing what they can to find the Colonel.» The Admiral looked at Harm as he said it.

«As you were,» The Admiral finished and left the bullpen.

«Wow,» Sturgis said.

«Sir, what do you think happened?» Bud Robert's asked.

Harm felt everyone staring at him.

«They will find the Colonel, right?» Harriet Simms asked, tears forming in her eyes.

«I don't know,» Harm mumbled as he left them and headed for the Admiral's office.

Somewhere in Afghanistan

Mac watched as two Afghan men dragged Lieutenant Mack into a small cell. «Be careful with him, please,» she said in Farsi.

The men didn't even care and dumped JJ on the floor. Mac and Corporal Harry Willies and Jack Garret were pushed inside the same cell. The gate was closed and soon they were alone.

«Are you okay, sir?» Jack asked.

«It's my leg, it's broken I think,» JJ said.

«You should stay still, JJ,» Mac said as she looked around the small cell. «It looked like they had too many guards outside for us to have a chance to escape.»

«The Lieutenant can't go anywhere anyway, ma'am,» Harry said.

«Why don't we all make this very simple and call each other by first name?» JJ asked. «If you don't mind, ma'am?» he asked mac.

«It's not ma'am, it's Mac,» Mac said and offered a weak smile. «I guess I won't bee going home today JJ.»

«I'm not sure we'll see the U.S ever again, Mac,» Harry said. «These men will torture us and kill us.»

Harm knocked on Chegwidden's office door and waited to be granted entrance before he entered the office. The Admiral sat by his desk, his hands entwined.

«I'm praying for her,» he said and stood. «You should do the same.»

«I won't give up on her, sir,» Harm said. «You know Mac, she'll find a way back to base.»

«Harm, if she has been taken by the Taliban...» Chegwidden rounded the table without finishing the sentence.

«I should go there, sir,» Harm said.

«And do what? Where will you look? We have the best of the best out there looking for her and they don't need a Navy man to get lost in the desert and create an even worse situation. Go home Harm, and I'll call as soon as I know something.»

Harm looked at the floor. He knew the Admiral was right. «I'm staying here, sir.»

The Admiral nodded.

Somewhere in Afghanistan

They had been locked in the cell for 23 hours when the gate opened and a surprisingly small man entered. He looked at the four marines that were sitting on the floor, and then he laughed.

«You are a woman,» he said in very good English.

«You speak very good English,» Mac said.

«I studied in London for four years. I even traveled to the U.S on a few occasions. Nice country, bad people,» he laughed. «Someone should have thought you that it's bad to come to someone else's country and tell them how to live.»

«You shouldn't have come to our country and killed our people! You and your people killed my sister!» Harry said sharply.

Again the man laughed. «Looks like you'll be joining her soon.»

«What do you want with us?» Mac asked.

«I want to strap bombs on your bodies so that you can go back to your camp and give the rest of your Marine friends a message,» the man said with a smile on his face.

«And what message is that? Nowhere in the Koran does it say that it's okay to kill innocent people. What you do is pure evil, and Allah doesn't support that,» Mac said as she stood.

«What do you know about my God?» the man yelled.

«My grandmother thought me about Islam, and I've read the Koran,» Mac said in Farsi.

«You're one of us then,» the man said in Farsi.

«I'm nothing like you,» Mac said coldly.

«Excuse me, I have so much to organize. I'm not sure I can use you,» he kicked JJ's foot, which made the Lieutenant scream. «We might have to send you to an early grave sooner than your friends here.»

The man left them and Mac hurried over to JJ. «Are you okay?»

JJ shook his head. «I wish he would have just shot me.»
