Subject: Love Letters 97 (New Chapter FINALLY!!)

Love Letters 97/?

Harm and Mac released their embrace and Mac looked up at him. "I think it's time you shared that marathon piece you wrote Harm."

"Ok," Harm replied and picked up his legal pad. Mac couldn't help but see a single page with just words randomly scattered around it. She immediately saw red.

"You mean to tell me you spent half the night writing that!" she aggressively replied grabbbing the offending page from his hand.

Harm immediately raised his hands in surrender. "No Mac, that's not what took me so long to compose." He took back the pad from her as he realized she had loosened her grip on the paper.

"Let me see what Mac's so upset about," Vera requested. Harm handed her the paper. On the sheet she saw what was very uncharacteristic for Harm...random thoughts. "So if this isn't what took so long, what did?"

"What's underneath and I guess it would go a long ways to soothe some ruffled feathers if I shared..." Harm began. Vera handed him back the pad.

"I think you should share with us first what your thought pattern was for the first page before though Harm," Vera remarked.

Harm began his explanation with a still slightly fuming Mac sitting beside him. "I guess I was trying to pull together my thoughts with the first page." Mac still had a glare to her eyes. She wasn't convinced yet that he had actually written something of more word substance than that she was seeing.

Harm began to read,
in the middle was the phrase -
never want to lose....MAC!
in a circle around the phrase going clockwise were the words -
relationship
respect -Mac as a woman
-Mac as an officer
-Mac's abilities
partners
best friends
love
children (baby deal)
have each others' back
careers
commitment
together forever

"So what do you take from those thoughts Harm?" Vera inquired.

"That Mac was an important part of my life that I didn't want to screw up and lose," Harm replied.

"And why would you have screwed up the relationship Harm?" Vera continued the inquiry.

"Because of my track record with women Commander," Harm said matter of factly.

"I take it that it's not that great?" she asked already thinking she knew the answer.

"I would never commit," Harm said, "except when it came to Mac."

"It took you nine years!" Mac reminded half jokingly.

"You're right, it did. Basically because I was SCARED!" Harm replied.

"You were scared of me?" Mac asked.

"Not of you, Mac. I was scared that I would screw up this relationship to the point that I would not only lose you, but your friendship as well," Harm replied.

"So given your past relationships you felt you needed to go slowly?" Vera asked for clarification.

"Yeah, I guess you could say that," Harm replied.

"We weren't always on the same page either," Mac added.

"That did slow things up a bit too," Harm said.

"So you said this was your first thought process to a larger work?" Vera inquired.

"Yes," Harm said. "If the parties present consent, I will present my arguements for changing the policy."

"Proceed counselor," Mac stated in her best judicial voice.

Harm stood in the middle of the living room and began his arguement. "Ladies, I intend to show the reasons why the current policies concerning relationships should be modified to better serve those who serve. Mac said something in her arguements earlier that I feel correlates with my thoughts. The great cartoonist and creator of 'Peanuts' used the phrase - 'Happiness is...' on a regular basis. Happiness is important to the overall health and wellbeing of each and every military person regardless of rank. As the regs stand right now, we are not looking out for the happiness and wellbeing of our personnel.

Mac interrupted Harm's dissertation. "Objection!"

"What could you possibly object to?" Harm asked.

"You're going to use a cartoon as a way to explain relationships?" Mac asked half-heartedly. She realized as she said it, that she really didn't have an objection. But since she was still a little miffed with Harm, she didn't just want to let him off the hook too easily.

"Yes Mac I am and would you like to withdraw your objection?" Harm responded with a smirk.

"Don't patronize me Harm!" Mac retorted.

"I'm not Mac, but you really didn't think before you objected did you?" Harm replied reaching out to take her hand.

Mac knew she'd been had. All she could do was grunt and shake her head. "Objection withdrawn counselor."

Vera threw in a question. "What about good discipline and morale?"

"What better way to promote good discipline and morale than to have happy personnel..." Harm answered.

"Point taken Captain," Vera replied with a smile. "Continue."

"I got to thinking about the comic strip in connection to Mac and from my first random thoughts, I came up with this entry..." Harm said. As Harm flipped the page, Mac glanced over an saw what appeared to be a very thoughtful entry. She felt ashamed that she had gotten so bent out of shape and she leaned her head onto his shoulder. He leaned over and kissed her forehead before continuing.

Mac = Sarah and she is my best friend.
Mac = Sarah and she is the person I love.

having my best friend as the person that I love.
Harm and Sarah as forever best friends.
Harm and Sarah as forever in love.

As he finished the last statement Mac felt the warm tears streaming down her face. Harm leaned down and took the pad of his thumb and wiped away her tears and then soundly kissed her on her trembling lips. All Vera could do is smile and wipe the tears from her own face. "How much in love these two really are," she thought to herself. "I'm so grateful they finally got it right!"

"So my argument ladies, is this. Each of us needs and deserves to be happy. It makes us much more productive, more dependable, and every other item that is part of good order and discipline. We are a military in the midst of change. We need to be much more responsive and respectful of the fact that couples are part of our ranks. As part of that we need to recognize and accept that couples are a part of military life rather than punish those who it affects. Couples are not just one who serves and one who waits anymore. We need to move into the new milenia and update our thoughts and practices," Harm stated matter of factly. "Earlier I sent my recommendations to the General for his review."

"You've already finished your report?" Mac quizzed. She couldn't imagine when he'd completed that task.

"That was the rest of what took me so long to complete the exercise. Once I got started thinking of how the regs affected us, it was easy for me to write the recommendation and then send if off for Cresswell's review and hopefully approval," Harm said.

"You are amazing you know," Mac said right after she gave him a quick but firm kiss.

Harm smiled and couldn't help himself with his reply. "I know."

To which he received a patented Mac swat on the arm. He obliged with the obligatory response of, "OUCH!"

Mac smiled and coyly replied, "You deserved it and you know it!"

Vera couldn't be happier with the way this was going. She knew as she returned to DC that these two were on solid ground and felt very blessed to call them friends.
