Love Letters 98a/?

JAG HQ - Washington DC
Gordon Cresswell sat behind his desk reading through the report sent him by one Captain Harmon Rabb, Jr. "I'll be damned!" he said shaking his head. He picked up the phone, he hoped that the person he was calling was in his office. He needed someone else's perspective on this one.

On the third ring an oft not heard voice came on the line, "AJ Chegwidden speaking..."

"AJ, Biff Cresswell here..."

"Hey Biff, long time since I heard from you..."

"I know..."

"How's the wife?"

"She's well as are the girls. AJ, the reason for my call..."

"Rabb?"

"How'd you know?"

"Why else would you call?"

"There are other reasons AJ..."

Chegwidden laughed as he answered, "I know Biff, but I had heard scuttlebutt that Rabb was working on a big policy change for you."

"You have ears in big places don't you?"

"Still do. Yes. So what's he done now?"

"It's not so much what he's done. It's more of a case that I don't think I know my people as well as I thought."

"I can come over to your office in say, an hour, that work for you?"

"I'll see you then," Biff said and hung up the phone. "I hope he can fill in some blanks for me. I really misjudged on this one, I fear."

Rabb flat, London

They had finished a great meal. Harm had grilled salmon, Mac had tossed a fresh green salad, and Vera pitched in by not only setting the table, but clearing it afterwards as well as loading and starting the dishwasher. Mac chuckled at the last part. "You know Vera, you're gonna have to tell me your secret. I can't get Harm to be quite that efficient, even when he promises to do the dishes."

"Just felt the need to do my part, Mac," she said. "I feel like I need to do something. You've both been so kind to me and tolerant of my questions. The least I can do is help with dishes."

"You're the one we need to be thanking Vera," Mac said. "You've been playing referee for us much more than anyone should have to and you've had to travel a bit of a distance to do it besides." Both women chuckled at Mac's last statement.

"Mac, I do have a question for the two of you, if you don't mind," Vera said hesitantly.

"You really have to ask permission Commander?" Harm chuckled as he spoke.

"Not really, but given all the stressors you've both been through, I don't want to create a new one."

"Not possible," Harm said frankly and Mac nodded in agreement. "Go ahead, what do you want to know?"

"You don't have to give me chapter and verse of what you wrote in your brief to the General, but were there incidents for the two of you that shaped your recommendations? My second part of the question is, would you be willing to elaborate?" Vera quizzed cautiously.

"There were several things that involved Mac and myself that as I look back I'm confident that were affected by the current regs, "Harm answered with conviction.

"I think I know at least some of the ones Harm is referring to as well," Mac added. "I would agree if we're thinking of the same instances."

"Well, should we retire back to our regular spots and continue this conversation?" Vera asked.

"How 'bout we take it out to the patio area?" Harm suggested. "It might be nice to have a change of venue."

"Sounds good to me," said Vera.

"I'll grab a pitcher of lemonade and glasses and meet you there," Mac said. Harm and Vera nodded and headed for the patio. Mac soon followed with said drinks and poured a tall glass for each of them before sitting beside Harm.

"There were many times Vera where Mac and I hestitated on moving forward and it kind of started from the time we met..." Harm began.

"When we met?" Mac quizzed. "Are you referring to that deja vu moment when we met and you thought you were seeing a ghost?"

"That and the fact that your Uncle Matt referred to me as "your boyfriend" the first time we met," Harm continued. Mac smiled and chuckled at that statement.

"He did didn't he?" Mac remembered. Harm nodded in agreement. "But remember, Adm. Chegwidden cautioned us not to get too close as we had to work together."

"That he did," Harm said. "You suppose he saw something then?"

"Possibly," Mac answered.

"You two were looking rather chummy from the time you met huh?" Vera asked.

"We both looked like we already knew each other," Mac replied. "Harm a bit more than me, but there was definitely a familiarity between us."

"Interesting," Vera answered. "Tell me more."

"Harm of course tried to proposition me during that mission to the back of a pickup," Mac reminised.

"I'm glad you didn't take the bait," Harm said. "We weren't ready for that step."

"I knew that. I'm not sure you did at the time though," Mac answered.

"I loved flirting with you from day one Mac," Harm said. "And you loved flirting back just as much."

"Point taken," Mac said.

Vera just smiled and shook her head. These two were just plain fun to listen to and she felt comfortable enough to only interject when absolutely necessary. "So flirting has been a staple in your relationship from the start huh?"

"I would say so," Mac said. "It was one of the things that made sorting out whether or not we were on the same page a problem."

"You were hard to figure out sometimes Ninja girl," Harm chided.

"As were you Stick boy!" Mac replied.

"Your pet names for each other?" Vera asked.

"Just a couple of them Commander," Harm answered. "They tended to change as our relationship grew."

JAG HQ...

AJ Chegwidden still knew his way through a building he rarely had visited since his retirement. Those few servicemen and women who were still there from his tenure stood and saluted which he returned the salute and then called them to "at ease" especially since he was now a civilian. He made his way to his old office and got ready to knock when the yeoman stopped him. "Sir, can I help you?" he asked.

"The General is expecting me," he replied and knocked on the door.

"Enter!" came from across the door and the yeoman returned to his desk as AJ entered the room. "AJ, glad you could come."

A brisk handshake took place between the two men and AJ spoke, "So what's he done now Biff?"

"He did exactly what I asked him to AJ. That's not my problem," Biff said. "How did you deal with their relationship?"

"Rabb and MacKenzie's?" AJ asked.

"Yes," Biff replied. "Were they really that involved the entire time you were JAG?"

"Define involved."

"I don't think I need to spell it out AJ. You know exactly what I mean," Biff replied a bit gruffly.

"There are varying degrees of involvement with them Biff," AJ said. "Exactly what are you referring to with them?"

"Were they dating and sleeping together while you were JAG and you just turned a blind eye?" Biff inquired.

AJ was slightly miffed at Biff's inquiry. "You're kidding right?"

TBC...
