Subject: Air Assault Badge

Although we were a Mech. unit, we went on many combat air assaults with the 1st. Cav, 173rd.AB, and other units we were attached to at one time or another. There are photos of our companies out on CA's in our website. I would guess that about half of our time we were on a chopper going out to the boonies. Many of us got the Air Medal over there.
I am saying this because we along many other troops of the 101st, 1st Cav. Div, and many other units who put our life in extra danger in CAs and who developed Airmobile/Air Assault tactics and perfected them in combat are not entitled to the Air Assault Badge.
Now, if you want to do somethig about it or want to support a group who has been working to get the Air Assault,to be awarded retroactively -

The person who started this website and effort is Guy C."Doc"Lamunyon who was a Medic over there.
Lets lend the support to his efforts.

Rigo I think when I was there(july68-july69) you had to have 25 combat assaults to qualify for an airmedal. The officers in Hdqs. would do them in 2 days without drawing fire.

I think part of the problem in awarding the air assault badge retro to combat vets is that the AAB is a TRADOC initiated award and delegated to the 101stAB. Can't very well award a training badge to combat situtions. Two different animals. Let's say there were no CIB award and us veterans were trying to get the EIB for combat= no bueno.
What the coalition is working is to retro award the AAB to personnel in Nam who made 1 Combat Assault or more. I am sure there will have to be changes, but that is when a Senator or Congressman sponsors the bill. Rigo
