First off, this post is for the realists so all you hippie idealists can stop reading this and go post another poem or meaningless "words to live by" post to accomodate "the world is perfect" mentality.
That being said, I think that this whole situation is bogus. What the hell kind of power struggle problems are going on here? I think that anyone who has been around this band long enough knows that Paul is the "end all, be all". In Paul's mind, it's HIS band. He is just ever so clever of hiding it. And make no mistake...Paul is an extremely intelligent guy who probably made small, careful moves to eventually cut ties with Alan. This was just the tip of the iceberg. Bobby and others have all proclaimed that there is a cold and vindictive side to Paul. Mike has always been the buffer between Paul's domineering mindset and the rest of the band...the smoother if you will.
Alan's departure, for me, brings a lot of realities to the forefront. #1: Artistically, Blotto has always been on the cusp of breaking out in a huge way. Maybe Alan wanted to follow that dream of being in the big venues playing the big shows. It's obvious that this is not something Paul is particularly interested in.
#2: Mr. Blotto is, and maybe always has been, the Chicago Cubs of the Chi music scene. The mentality of "why risk sticking our necks out when we will always get people to show up at our gigs" is what has ultimately depressed even the most dedicated Blotto Fans. While admittedly spoiled on nights in Vasa Park and the Abbey, they have lessoned the bar at lesser venues (with an occasional awesome show though).
#3: Alan is irreplaceable! There is no way that this band will ever sound the way it did while he was here...NO WAY!!! Tony will make Blotto a great band again (I have faith) but, inherently, it will be different. Alan IS the best member in Blotto....period. Mark is amazing and so are the rest but Alan was always taken for granted. The average listener is only concerned with singing and screaming guitar solos.
and #4: There is obviously a recurring issue of power (or direction) among the Bolger Boys (specifically Paul) and the rest of the members who hop on the Blotto Bus.
With that, I give #5 to Tony.
Here's some advice: Enjoy playing in this band just like Alan did but remember, your not going to be in on the directional decisions. Your playing a part. Your a subordinate with an egocentrist at the helm.
