I had lunch with Harvey yesterday and wished him a happy trip to his home which is located in my former hometown.
Last night, a local friend, Dennis, was with me when a large segment of my family began to arrive.
This all centered around a house I closed on all by myself today.
I was looking for a 2-bedroom house with a decent kitchen. A den would be nice in addition to a living room. So would a garage. I found a house I fell in love with. It has 2 stories, 3 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms. There`'s also a toilet downstairs at the detached garage apartment and a full bath upstairs.
It's a little much. Everybody agreed on that. That includes 2 daughters and several grandkids. My sons have not seen the house but question if that is what I need. The boys hate for me to move seven hours away but this is where I enjoyed my freshman year in college.
Barb, my oldest daughter, went to college here and settled an hour away. My youngest daughter, who is working on an exciting career of her own, went to college here and settled not that far from Barb and family.
A retiring professor is selling the house. I'm 62 and have a job assured for 2 years.
As I showed the family the house, I noticed a pack of cigarettes in Barb's purse. Barb smoked a few cigarettes with me weekend before last.
When we got shed of her husband, my younger daughter and the kids, I asked Barb if she was still smoking.
She told me yes and no which is something she told me since her teen days. She said she was smoking and her husband knew it but the kids did not. However, the cigarettes in her purse were taken away from her 14-year-old daughter shortly before heading to the house I was considering buying.
At that point, we pulled up a couple of chairs and had a cigarette from my pack.
One of the tourist was my granddaughter, Whitney, who is a smoker. Whitney is 20 and currently shares an apartment with Emily, Barb's second daughter. Emily, also 20, does not smoke
In addition to Barb's youngest 2 kids, the girlfriend of her son came along. As we left, we decided to go to a dinner place that has been open since I was in college.
Whitney and I smoked before the dinner. After dinner we lit up again. Then 16-year-old Priscilla, who was escorted by grandson Ed, pulled a pack of Camel Lights out of her purse and said she just had to have a cigarette.
Barb said she has had a cigarette before and took out the Marlboro Light pack she took from Sarah, her 14-year-old daughter, and offered Sarah one. She said she probably smoked while we were looking around the house and yard. There are a couple of hiding places.
Sarah sort of laughed and told her mother she was so smart. Emily, the non-smoking big sister, said she could not believe this was happening.
Then Barb lit up and told Sarah the next time she wanted a cigarette, Sarah could have one also. Sipping a beer, Barb wanted one about 45 minutes later.
Since Emily was allowed to drink with her parents, she was softened by the beer she was drinking at a pace much faster than her mother. With Barb's urging, Emily had her first cigarette. After about 3 puffs, she said cigarettes even made beer taste bad. While Whitney was free to smoke, she had no parent to allow her drinking.
