What had been the old management group at work gathered with spouses for dinner and drinks tonight. Maggie, wife of Rick, has quit smoking. She felt betrayed to see Sara, wife of Wes smoking.
Sara, about 40, had been a social smoker but has picked up with Wes going on so many trips. She blamed missing him for her steady smoking and her went for that.
Soon, Maggie, who is 34, asked for a cigarette. All of us were smoking. The others were Wanda, 39; Joan, 55, and the main boss and me. I'm 27.
Wanda is the mother of Allison who is 17 and goes with Weston, Wes and Sara's son. Allison has been working in the student program and will go fulltime in the summer. She bummed a couple of Winstons off Joan and then bought a pack of them.
As Maggie continued to bum, Joan said she hoped Maggie was not getting started again since she was going to quit while her daughter and granddaughter are here for the summer.
In fact, Joan said, her daughter would be a server at the restaurant we were at. Joan's husband said they would have to do their drinking somewhere else.
"Or tell them you can't quit smoking," Maggie said. I was wondering if Rick was raising the table. I know he had happy pants.
