I was always for the underdog. My mother badmouthed smokers behind their backs. Smokers were not bad people. When I was 11, I was playing football in the back yard and came down on my arm. I could feel the pop and see the sag.
The lady at the house came running out with cigarette in hand. They say smokers can't run. She bent over and saw my arm was broken. She took a deep puff, let the smoke out her nose and mouth, and told her son to get a clean sheet, scissors and ice as she exhaled. .
It really didn't hurt that bad. She kept saying hold still honey. She cut the sheet and wrapped an ice pack on the sag.
Then she had me hold my arm still and sit up. Then she wrapped about half the sheet around me to keep the arm still. Dad got there. Mom would have had a fit so I'm glad she was shopping.
They helped me up and took me to this hospital. There a beautiful yooung nurse came out of this ER and told me to sit in a wheelchair. She hugged me and said I would be fine. I could smell she had just finished a cigarette.
The got me loose and put on a splint. Then I went to X-ray. Then they put me in a room and this pretty nurse told me what they were going to do.
The put in an IV and deadened my arm. Then the doctor stretched out the sag and put a temporary cast on me. I got a real cast about a week later. They both said the ice kept the swelling down so the tempporary cast could be better.
The arm never gave me any trouble. I was sad to see the nurse was not the doctor's nurse. The doc said she worked in the hospital. I got mother to let go thank her. She was on break. I went into the breakroom to tell her I was fine. She hugged me and said I was very brave.
My wife was smoking a cigarette when I met her. Pretty soon she was hugging me as she smoked a cigarette.
