It seems I've discovered something Parke and Joyce have in common besides the fact that their kids are interested in each other.
Parke is the mother of Clay. She smoked with me last weekend at a motel where the school's softball team is playing. Joyce is the mother of April, a friend of Jessica's.
At lunch in the women's room of the country club, Joyce said she has always been a party smoker but is probably smoking more now than every before. While Joyce sneaks cigarettes, so does April, her 14-year-old daughter.
Reaching for one of Gloria's Marlboro Lights, Parke said she had some cigarettes over the week and here she is bumming another.
With us was Bernadine. If you took a picture at just the right time, you would have seen Bernadine holding one of Gloria's cigarettes. Bernadine did not accept Gloria's offer of a cigarette for the purpose of smoking but did take to determine "the feel."
Gloria's daughter Hillary took up smoking as soon as her high school track career and Bernadine's daughter, Kelli, who usually followed her in distance races, followed suit in smoking. Bernadine threw a fit which probably only prompted Kelli to smoke more.
As we talked, Parke told us she heard about some of the girls cigar episode. She said her son provided the cigars to his girlfriend. Everybody knows Cameron goes with Neely, the pitcher on the softball team still in the playoffs.
The other girls were not identified except Parke said some of the girls were on the softball team and some not. The others were not identified. Jessica, not on the softball team, was one.
Bernadine asked if Kelli was one. Parke shook her head negatively. Darn, Bernadine said. We could go to a cigar bar and bond without me giving in. Gloria said she never had a cigar but she was sure she and Hillary would join Bernadine and Kelli if they wanted to do that.
The conversation next drifted to how undependable Joyce's Avon lady is. That's the way it was when our luncheon broke up.
