Sometimes I wonder how I let myself develop an addiction to cigarettes. I didn't even smoke a cigarette until I got to college. I could go days without until I came to college to do graduate work. The guy who lured me here got me to smoking daily.
I soon found I was doing without this guy for weeks at a time but still not doing without my daily cigarette. Then I think of my mother. When Jeff and I managed to get back together for dates, not a live-in, we invited our parents to see us together. After all, they conspired to match us up.
Sitting around and having a good time, my mother picked up a cigarette and asked for a light. At 49, she's passed her teens. Even Jeff's mother joined in the smoking although my mother was light years ahead.
Now, I smoke 5-10 Marlboro Lights a day. My mom has taken over where I left off, smoking 10-15 a day. Moving into her second half century, she smokes anywhere others light up.
Jeff's mother seems to leave smoking behind when she leaves the college town. They do have cause for celebration. We plan to get married in December.
