Hya Dave,

Oddly, it was the GALS who had a lot to do with the migration of young folks to FM. (I think the COMPLETE and irrevocable majority chageover was late 72/early 73).
On Long Island, 1969 or so, WNHC-FM New Haven was doing a fake-Drake kinda contortion, and then developed rapidly into WPLR -- 'Popular 99' -- with a dayparted mix of A/C and Top 40, plus some AoR thrown in at night. The young gals and their Vietnam service boyfriends were looking for more than anything AM pop had to offer.

And when WBLI went on in February 1971, AM stations such as WGBB and WGLI got swamped in the aftertow.
