Subject: I have a question for all you shopaholic fashionista ladies

Have you ever tried either

www.polyvore.com

or

www.kaboodle.com ?

They're sort of like Last.fm but for clothes and fashion and shopping. I'm not really sure I get it. They seem to be about sharing and discovering new products, and are like social networking for shopping. Apparently this is the next big thing, and they are really taking off with women. But I don't have time to research them properly. Do you guys use them? Do they look like fun?

This is polvore's about blurb:
Polyvore is a free, easy-to-use web-based application for mixing and matching images from anywhere on the web. It is also a vibrant community of creative and stylish people.

Polyvore lets you create sets composed of individual images using an easy to use, drag and drop editor. After you have created a set, you can publish and share it with your friends and the Polyvore community.

Polyvore is often described as "highly addictive" by those who fall in love with its collaging functionality and spend hours creating sets to share with others.

Polyvore offers an unprecedented level of direct engagement with real products and brands, while its social features make it a powerful platform for the creation and distribution of user-generated advertising.

This is kaboodle's about blurb:

Kaboodle is a social shopping community where people discover, recommend and share products. Kaboodle's powerful shopping tools allow people to organize their shopping through lists, discover new things from people with similar style, get discounts on popular products and find best prices. At the heart of Kaboodle is a fun and engaging community of people who love to shop. Community members create and join groups, share advice, feedback and product suggestions and personalize their profiles with polls and other widgets.

I love clothes and fashion but I honestly don't think I'd have the patience with this idea at all, it all seems a bit fiddly and annoying, the websites are too fussy i.m.o. and I must admit I'm not quite sure what the attraction is either, I'll ask my daughter to have a look when she arrives and find out what I'm missing.

Do ask your daughter, I'm curious. Apparently these are really taking off.

we've been playing with the polydore site for a while but neither of us would choose to use something like this, Tina has more patience that I but even so she didn't manage to finish putting together an outfit and completely ran out of patience eventually. I can see what the attraction might be for sites such as this for some women but personally for me I'm not into chatting about fashion in such detail, asking the girls opinion on here about something is about as far as I would go.

So what is your interest in this, are you interested in the concept or how the website is put together? Actually now I think of it one of the things I found annoying was the speed of the demo vids, much too fast to be of any use for anyone who didn't have a clue, especially the clipper tool vid.

We might try the other site at some point, I'll let you know what we think.

These sites are getting a lot of buzz and a lot of investment. But I'm struggling to get to grips with them (a) because I just don't have time at the moment and (b) because I really am not who the target audience is, and so it is very hard for me to try to see what users are meant to be getting out of this. But it is absolutely my job to understand this kind of thing. The mechanics of the sites is easy for me to work out, but I also need to understand the concept, the user experience.

I think Kaboodle *might* be more your cup of tea.

I personally don't think it's all that user friendly, too much information which takes too long to wade through before you can get an idea of what sort of look you would like to create, I seemed to spend far too much time learning how to use it, by then I was fed up of it and didn't spend enough time putting together an outfit.

I think the only part of the site I didn't look into was the forums, I think I would have to register to access them, that would make the experience of using the site more interesting I would think, there's nothing women like better than chatting, especially about clothes!

I don't need a five page report or anything! Just what's cool about it, why she likes it, what it brings to her online shopping experience. It would be really helpful.

I'm happy to buy books, CDs, DVDs, computer stuff etc. online. But I don't think I'd like buying clothes online. I want to try things on, see them up close in real life before I'd buy anything. I'm pretty much the same with food too. (Although I don't normally try my food on. I neither wear the cheese nor does it wear me.)

Thanks G-Biddy (*runs*)

I'm the same way you are about buying clothes and food online but it's fun to look at and find new stuff.
