Subject: Dollhouse unaired episodes

I'm not sure how many of you watched Dollhouse, which got off to a (very) bad start but ended really really well, but if you did watch you may or may not know the following:

The DVD is about to be released and will contain two (yes, two!) unaired episodes which were leaked on Bittorrent late last night and I just watched them.

First is Echo, the original pilot episode which Fox rejected. It's excellent, really excellent, much much better than the aired pilot Ghost which I wasn't a fan of. It's much more noir, and much much darker. Fox really are idiots.

Then there is Epitaph One, the 13th episode which was to be a sort of coda, a bit like Restless was at the end of Buffy season 4. It's set ten years in the future, in a sort of post-apocalyptic LA, with flashbacks. Fox declined to buy this episode, but it is airing in other countries (including the UK) and is included on the DVD as the official thirteenth episode. I'm hoping future seasons all end with an Epitaph X. This was completely mind-blowing and is instantly one of my favourite ever Joss Whedon episodes, up there with the best of Buffy, Angel, Firefly and Dr Horrible.

Echo is good, but non-canon. Epitaph One is absolutely essential viewing, and presumably is canon -- i.e. Dollhouse is in part going to be the story of how things go this horribly wrong. I believe Epitaph One (but not Echo) will be available on iTunes some time in early August.

Bloody brilliant, wasn't it? We were just speculating (and hoping) that next season may have "Epitaph Two" at some point, as you say, with an ongoing parallel storyline to the current plot.

Loved Amy Acker in this episode, and all of the little throwaway lines that I'm sure could come up in the future (such as Alpha being responsible for inventing the cure/ Safe Haven) and the scene between Crazy Topher and Adelle was beautiful.

As for it being one of the best Joss Whedon episodes it certainly had his mark all over it, but the writing credit actually went to Maurissa Tancharoen and Jed Whedon (who I've been really pleasantly surprised by - nepotism isn't all bad!)

I know the teleplay was by JedMo, what I meant to say was Epitaph One was one of my favourite episodes of a Joss Whedon show. Amy Acker was indeed awesome, as was Enver Gjokaj, and the little girl actress was pretty astounding too.

Echo will probably be tonight's viewing.

As for the girl, we kept trying to place the face all the way through the episode; it was only by checking IMDB afterwards that we remembered she was Molly from Heroes (the girl with the ability to trace other people with powers).

but I was so disappointed in the first couple of eps I gave up on it, I really wish I hadn't now and had stuck with it but I'm certainly going to get the DVD box set as soon as it comes out.

Because if you were and you still have the episodes stored, then just try watching episode 6, Man on the Street. If you don't enjoy that, then fair enough, Dollhouse isn't for you. But for me and most people who watched that was the episode where the show finally came together.
